'Da vid Bail ey (Suz , not that one) m ade a hol esh ot int o a short -lived lead in moto on e of the combined 125cc Exp ert a nd 125cc Pro class . Thornton and Kurt Howland (Suz) wer e qui ck to put on a pass , and th e Pros sa iled away fro m th eir Expert rivals. In th e 125cc Expert race, Da vid Froembl ing (Suz) led th e pack over Billy Weiland (Yam) and Bail ey while Thornton was pull ing a way on his Floater. Thornton put a no ther rnoto win under his belt with Howland second . Howland is the you ng lu cky rider who won a fr ee RM125 from MOtOCTOSS A ct ion magazine and has progressed into a fin e Pro a fter movin g up throu gh th e ranks. . BRENT W O O D, CA , DEC . 27 New leathers, new boots and' b ikes made their debut at Sand H ill R an ch 's m ~tocross under su n ny skies today as dark clouds hung over Co ntra Costa Co unty . The Open Exp ert race brought everyone to the sidelines as Joey Schlag holeshot and led with Jerome H eiberger in chase . Internati on all y kn own Brad La ckey got a poor start in 10th position and mov ed to third within a few la ps. O n the seventh lap, joey's front brake locked , sending him over the bars and giving the lead to Heiberger. Schlag managed to hold second with Lackey in third unable to close in the short tim e remaining. J erry Brand t holeshot the second moto with Schlag a nd Heiberger in tow . Heiberger took the lead on the firs t lap and began to open it up. Schlag worked to second , and Lackey canie back from another poor start , . sevent h to third . The 250cc Experts set a fast and furious pace as Bill Fernandez took the lead . La rry Wosick's Honda p ressu red Bill the entire race and his efforts paid off as Fernandez finally fell . Sh awn McConn , number one CMC plate ho lder, he ld a steady third while Jerry Br and t (Concord Yam) and Kimo Casey, of Supercycle in . Concord , diced for fourth . Brandt's new 1982 Yamaha passed Casey's '8 1 in Chicken Coop co rn er as Kimo dove underneath to pass back in th e next tu rn. Brand t , however , passed on th e u p hill straight and powered off. Sha wn McCon n led the seco nd moto for two la ps after a tremendous holeshot. Wo sick and Fernandez were in hot pu rsui t, and by lap four Casey had moved from eig hth to fift h . A ta ngle between Fernandez a nd lapped rider Doreen Payne mo ved Bra ndt to third and Casey to fourt h . Wosick took first overall . Mike Holmes led the entire race in 125cc Expert with Alan Silhanek trying several tim es to put the pass on. Mike Whalen tri ed to m ove from fourth to th ird by passing Steve Arena the downhill right -hand corner, but Arena ' wou ldn 't allow that and Whalen ended up off the co urse. Never to be discouraged , Whalen hopped on again in fifth pos ition and mov ed to th ir d by the end. T he seco nd mo to seemed to be a repea t as Holmes led and Silh a nek held second. Wha len tried to pass Silhaek for second this time and went over the handlebars, However , he again finis hed thir d. Ho lmes took first overa ll. Dick Mann thoroughly th rashe d th e Old Timers class with #44 taking second , Jeff McCormick led the 250cc Novic es from start to finish in moto one, The finish found McCorm ick and #244 ta ngled against th e scorebooth , but Jeff was first th rough the checkers. In the second moto , McCormick was in l\10«) t wo wa s Thor nton 's show . Stacy co uld be seen flying around the co urse bei ng chased by very d istant Howland , Froem bl ing and Bailey. Thornton was really styling out front , putti ng on -a good show that wowed t he crowds. Howland ag ain too k a second a nd in th e Exp erts, Fro em bli ng too k bot h motos for th e win . The 250cc Pr o class was co m bined with the Exp erts as well, and Robb Mann ing made a mess of th e rest of th e troops . Lance Rich ott e (Hus) a new rider in th e 250cc and Open wars , held down second throughout th e re m a ind er of th e race . Manning was un catch abl e as he n ed th e pack . Froembling (Ho n) led the Exp ert portion o f t he race and went un ch all enged , as did Manning . R ich otte took a second and sta yed within a reason able margin of Manning , but not too close . Second rnoto had Manning put a Honda into the lead and sail aw a y, looking quite superb. and is most likel y p re paring himself for the upcoming race at th e Kingdome in Februa ry. Young Jeff Sowards swept both rnot os of th e Min i class on his Yamaha . - In th e first mot o , Rand y Hartley (Suz) stay ed within st riki ng d ista nce with J ohn Sowards (Ya m) third . Second moto had Jeff Sowards a nd J ohn Sowards tak e th e lea d ove r Hartley, who went ou t lett ing Wa yne Mannin g (Ya m) into third wher e he stayed .unt il th e end, Jeff Sowards p la ced first bot h motos over John Sow ards (3·2) and Manning (5· 3). Rand y Glaze (Ya m ) won both mot os in th e Open B class over Husky rider Dave Web er a nd Wes Ja cobson (H us).
