Gormleyand Griewe dice at DeAnza By Kit Palmer SUNNYMEAD , CA , DEC . 20 Yamaha of Indio's Craig Gormley (Yam) managed to squeals out a ha rd -fought victory over Malcolm Sm ith's Don Griewe (H us) at DeAnza Cycle Park. _ The action began with the start of the first Open Pro mota when Griewe rocketed int o the lead just ahead of , Anaheim Suzuki's Scott Cavness (SUI), Gorm ley and Eddie Michetti (SUI) . Duri ng the ea rly laps, Cavness p ut heavy pressu re o n the leader but began to give slightly to Griewe halfway th ro ugh the race. A battle de veloped , over thirdwhen Gormley and Cavness began rubbing elbows . The duel ended when Cavness's Su zuki seized on the 10th la p . As time ran out there was no way _ for Gormley to ca tch the j am ming Griewe. Michetti held on to third while Qu int on Sm ith (SUI) settled for fourth. Griewe bli tzed into the lea d in the second moto pursued by Gormley and Michetti . The two leaders began to ru n away from the pack as they b a ttl ed for the to p spot. Throughout m uch of the race , it looked as though Gormley wouldn't gain any distance on Gr iewe . On the final la p , Go rmley stuffed his Yamaha un dern eath Griewe , stealing the lead an d t he overall, Third again went to Michetti. Canadian N ational Cha mp , Ross Pederson (SUI), in preparation for the upcomi ng Golden Sta te Series, swept bot h motos in the 250cc Pro class while Ma ico m ounted Da n Paulson took seco nd. Sh aun H anson (Hon) managed a seco nd in th e firs t rnoto of the 250cc Begin ner class bu t led every lap of rnoto two to take ho me first overall. 'W hen the first moto got underw ay Mike Quigley (Yam) j am med into the lea d of the 125cc Intermed iat e class just ah~ad of Con Berner (Yam) and Suzuki -mounted j im Pea rson. Q uigley managed to hol d on to h is slim lea d until he bogged his motor on the sixth lap handing Berner and Pearson the first and second spot. Pearson began to put heavy pressure on Berner during the .next cou ple of la ps and soon too k over the lead . By the time the check ered flag appeared , Pearson held o n to a slig ht lead over second p lace fini sher Berner. Q uigley h ad to settle for third . At th e start of moto two Quigley again ju m ped into the lead followed by Pearson and Bern er. Pearson began p utting the move on Quigley ha lfway through the rac e. By th e seventh la p Pearson manag ed to slip past Quigley taking over th e lead. By no mea ns was Quigley going to give up . With only two laps remain ing Quigley regained th e lead for go od by stuffing his Yamaha underneath Pea rson . Pea rson 's 1-2 com bo was enough to ta ke the overa ll with Q uig ley finishing second . Berner's 2-3 tally gave him th ird . The 125cc Novice class sa w a tigh t b a ttl e between Da nny Cantley (Yam) and current quarter trophy point lead er John Cushingh am (SUI). When the ga te dropped for moto one , Cantley roosted int o th e lead with Cu shingham and Greg Pirolo (H on ) in p ursuit. The two lea ders began to run away fro m the pack , d ueling for the lead. Du ring the fourth lap Cushingham m an aged to sneak by Ca ntley to take the lea d . Cushingham held on throughout the rest of the race to ta ke th e win j ust ahead of Cantley. Pirolo fini shed in thir d . . . Aga in Cantley grabbed th e hol eshot in th e second moto with Cushingham , Pirolo and Todd Rypka (Suz) ho t on his tracks. In a repeat of th e firs t moto the two top contenders began to fight for the lead. Unlike moto one , Cantley held on -to his lead for th e win . Cushingham settled for second while Rypka won his d uel taking third. Randy Brockett (Yam ) convinci ngly won bo th rnotos in the Mini Beginner class ahead of second place finisher , Miguel Araujo (Yam) .
