- Lucerne V_II., - Reel MounbIln - f used a lot of last month's National third loop in the Rand Mountains. The speed averages were just about right in the sand hills, with most A riders hustling to stay on time. as it was quite tight and at 24 mph. The averages were a bit slow on the second loop. with the only fast speeds in open desert. The averages were good on the third loop. with one long special test at 24 mph which caught most A riders late. CN 00 (j') Sunday The weather remained the same as the day before. with clear skies. the temperature in the mid-70·s. and no wind. The course remained the same. except that it was ridden in the opposite direction, and had nice berms built up. The speed averages were changed a little. with the special test on the third loop, being run at 30 mph. The one thing that did not remain the same were the winners, as Bertram made himself right at home amongst the pucker bushes and whoop-de-doos. to nail down the overall and Open A win. with a score of 2/94. His total score for both days of 5, which was good for second overall, also was good enough to win the number one plate in the Golden State Series. Congratulations. Dave. Narrowly missing out on the overall was Grant Palenske with a score of 2/106. This put the icing on the cake for Grant. as he had locked up the number one Open plate at Training Wheels enduro. The third slot in the Open A class went to the overall winner for both days. Jon Miller (21112). In the 250cc A class. KTM-mounted Bill Fullmer. Jr. dropped three to take the win. after seeing his chance for number one 200cc go down the drain when his Yamaha lost a transmission on Saturday. Yamaha-mounted Jon Speight dropped five points for second. while Maico-mounted Mark Cook lost six points for third. The determination award goes to a 250cc A rider, Yamaha-mounted Mike Garrett. who had a chance for the number one plate. and rode this entire event with two separated shoulders. One he received at Training Wheels enduro. the other. trail riding last weekend. He finished both days_ Garner Palenske seized the lower end in the special test on the third loop. The 200cc A class was won by the D37 enduro steward. 'Yamaha-mounted Jerry Bailey. with a score of 10. followed by Kawasaki-mounted Ron Reinholdson. with a score of 14. Tracy Walters broke his frame in half on the second loop. In the Senior class. the win went to Wheelsmith Maico-sponsored Harry Keast (11/330). but the real story is that Yamaha-mounted 2,on Fry locked up the number one plate with his second place finish. Third was taken by Husky-mounted Curt Horst (15). Tullis lost a transmission on the second loop. but was on hand at the finish' to congratulate the new number one. Another number one plate was settled when AJ Baker-sponsored Jerry Counts (13) thumped his Honda XR250R to second place in the Fourstroke class. just a slot ahead of Kawasaki-mounted Fred Hayes (19), enabling Jerry to earn the number one plate. Taking the win was John Poor, Jr. (11). I would like to congratulate all the number one plates for having the consistency and luck that it takes to end up on top. Again. the number ones are Grant Palenske (Open). Garner Palenske (250cc). Tracy Walters (200cc). Ron Fry (Senior). and Jerry Counts (Four-st~). 8 r--------------, AdvERTisiNG ThAT WORks Pros Use Durable Steel Structured Tote Wagon To Protect And Transport Up To Three Enduro Or Motocross Bikes OPTIONAL ITEMS Name Address City • Aluminum kNldlne ...mp • Work bench • Tle-down system Regional Facilz'tz'es A nd National Network Of Dealers To Serve You. _ _ State_ _Zip_ _ CALL TOLL FIfU J~"J ,*75A FREE Sl'£ClRCAnotf 811OCH111f£ Please send me ......c:... ct(2J. :lNNIJ copies Cycle News Products P.O.
