Book Review OSC Spark Plugs e All The Winners Of The ~ ~ 4th Annual BOSCH Classic ~ CANYON RACEWA~ PHOENIX, AZ. NO"- 28,29 k VZinger STEVE BITSILLY Yam Pee Wee Novice Yam TIMBO REEVES Harley-Davidson: The Milwaukee Marvel By Harry Sucher Photographed by Haynes Hardcover, 283 pages, $22.95 This is the book we have been waiting for ever since reading The Iron. Redsk£n, Dr. Sucher's book of a few seasons past that told the rise and fall of the Indian motorcycle company. The problem for the author this time around is that H-D is alive and well in Milwaukee. Sucher's style is to tell the whole truth and let the libel suits fall where they may. Perhaps that is why the latter pan of the book, from WW II to the present, reads more like recent H·D press releases. Those who have their muck raked in the early going are dead and not likely to retaliate. Harley·Davidson's story is the story of American free enterprise in the 20th century, the small, mama & papa workshop that rises to become a multi· million dollar international business, goes public and is engulfed by a bigger conglomerate. The book ends just as a new chapter is starting, with the buy· back of the company by descendants of the original founders. Sucher did his investigative reporting well, interviewing all the best eyewitnesses who would talk to him, He tells of the annual price ftxing meetings between the heads of Harley and Indian during the depression years. He details how Harley came to "own" the AMA, and while we do not agree with many of their policies through the years, after reading this book we can at least understand them better. It contains nearly 300 big pages of small type and delightful pictures. Unfortunately. it also contains many, many typographical errors. I recommend that you buy and read this book, if only to see how H-D taught the Japanese to make motorcycles. Harley· Davidson: 'J 'h.e Milwaukee Marvel is available from Motorsport, 6115 Gravois, St. Louis, MO 63116 for $22.95. plus $1 for postage' and packing. Charles Clayton 17
