HardIck runs away at CMC Carlsbad Wledelinan wallops 'em at DeAnza By Myron Hemley. By Kit Palmer CARLSBAD, CA, NOV. 22 SUNNYMEAD, CA, NOV. 22 Clint Hardick rode wire to wire in both motos to win the 250cc Pro class at the Continental Motasports Club's Carlsbad MX. I t seems as though the Beginner and Novice classes put out as much exciting action as the Pro races do_ At DeAma Cycle Park Hardick took an early lead in moto one over David Gerig, Woody Carlson, Steve'Rhyan and Jim Odle-o Rhyan moved into third over Carlson on lap three, but was forced out of the race on the next lap due to engine trouble. Carlson regained third, but lost it to OdIe on the uphill of lap four. Hardick had opened a 1"4-second lead over Gerig by lap four and fmished with a 51second lead for the win. Gerig followed in second, Odie was third, and Pete Murray passed up Carlson to take fourth. In the second moto Hardick was quickly back out in front ahead of 'Rhyan, OdIe, Carlson and Gerig. Odie moved into second when Rhyan was once more forced to the pits. Gerig passed Carlson on the second lap to move into third. Hardick had opened a 51-second lead by lap 12 when he got a flat rear tire, but he easily held on for the win. Odie held onto second while Gerig came in third and Carlson fourth. some of the best racing was produced from the 125cc Novice class. It all started when Mark Wiederman (Suz) roosted into the lead in the first moto ahead of Larry Anderson (Suz), Kevin Montgomery (Suz), John Cushingham (Suz) and Eric Bellwood (Yam). Wiederman quickly developed a slight lead, letting the rest of the pack battle over second. During the second lap Montgomery ma~aged to slip past Anderson, taking over the second spot. The next time around Cushingham labored his way up to third, creating heavy pressure for Montgomery. But Montgomery never let up, eventually finishing second behind Wiederman. Third went to Cushingham while Bellwood took fourth. The start of moto one left Cushingham involved in· a first tum pile-up while Anderson, Wiedennan and Montgomery fought over first. Cushingham quickly remounted beginning his upward journey. Meanwhile, Wiederman again snuck by Anderson on the third lap taking control of the lead. During the same lap Montgomery went down handing Bellwood third. As the race progressed Anderson tried to hold off the hard charge of Bellwood but gave in on the fourth go-around. From there on positions remained the same as Wiederman took the checkered flag for the win. Results 100 JR: 1. O. Joooph ISuzl. MINI JR: 1. D. Kuhn lYoml; 2. D. l.8cllner IKawI. 125 JR: 1. At night's end Arlington had gathered 219 points towards their bopeful championship quest while Cerritos mustered 200 points_ Finishing third was the school of Mater Dei with a scant three-point advantage ~ fourth place finisher £Speranza. 157-154. Hemet took fifth with 146 points. One of the top scores of the night came from Mater Dei's Vince McMahon (Yam) who easily dominated the U5cc Senior class, winning both matos. Second place went to Arlington's Gary Clark (Yam) who finished with a 2-2 score. McMahon also won both matos in the 17Sec Senior class. In the U5cc Novice division., Kurt Strand (Yam) of £Speranza combined a 2-1 score to capture fust overall in front of Arlington's second place finisher Wylie Eng (Yam). Third went to another £Speranza rider, Ed Johnson (Suz), after compiling a 5-2 score. Mater Dei's Steve Kirkpatrick had to come from behind in moto one to take the win in the Mini Novice class, but in the second moto, Mike Dondel (Yam) of Hemet ruined Kirkpatrick's bid for a perfect win ~y narrowly beating Kirkpatrick at the finish. But Kirkpatrick's 1-2 combo bested Donders 51 total. Walter Flicker (Yam) of Cerritos took third overall with a 4-5 tally. Results HIGHSCHOOl MINI NOV: 1. S _ KirkpMricI<; 2. Mike 00ndeI lYom!; 3.
