Webb zeroes Training Wheels By Ed Regehr LUCERNE VALLEY, CA,l'lOV. 15 Husqvama-sponsored Tom Webb continued his second half hot S........tItIon Mountain - Jun - Rand Mounh.... - Luceme Valley - Red Mountain - Plaster CIty - Searchttpt - Sldewlnd streak, dropping only 68 seconds on his way to the overall win in the Training Wheels M_C. enduro. For Tom it was an easy win, as HiDesert Kawasaki-sponsored Tracy Walters dropped four points on his way to first 200cc A and second overaII. Since the summer break. Tom has two overalls and a second overall behind Terry Cunningham in the ·National. - The Training Wheels enduro was originally scheduled for earlier in the year. but was rescheduled when the date they had chosen was Mother's Day. The date change also caused an area change. Instead of Red Mountain, Lucerne Valley was now the site, with tht; pits located off Camp Rock Rd. near Anderson Dry Lake. The course consisted of three loops, with the first loop for family riders, the second loop for all classes, and the third loop for AA's, A's, and B's only. No late points were assessed to the three loop riders on the first loop. The one loop winner was Checkpoint member R. Sinor with a score of 1/88. He was followed by G. Morrison (3/50) and M_ Dion (3/155). All three were on 80cc bikes. Taking the C overall was Maicomounted Charles Brown with only 12 secontls lost. Following Brown were Bill Dunlap and David Dobbins. Mter a 19 minute break for gas and repairs, second Senior B, Erick Lehmann headed out on the third loop at 60 mph, while first Senior A Ron Fry sat at the reset two miles out_ Actual speed the riders had to maintain in this section was 40 mph. At the finish, many riders considered the enduro as having one of the best laid-out courses of the year. with good speed averages. and very good marking. considering all the new terrain the club used. The-club used a lot of speed changes to make the riders think. and a lot of obserVation checks to keep them on the course. The course was very rocky. which led to many flat tires, and dust was a problem. The Training Wheels should be congratulated for a super job of finding new terrain in a very over-used area. • Up ahead. third Open A Greg Newland bounced through the rocks, as third 200cc A. Kawasaki-mounted Ron Reinholdsen picked his way up a very rocky hill, while third Senior A Curt Horst dabbed a few times on the rocky downhill before the second observation check. A few miles later. the riders would fmd the first check on.this loop. All A and B riders were late at this check except for Webb, who zeroed it. Mter that check, Open A Robert Kierns sat at a reset. as fourth overall, first Open A, Spect!o/Super See/ND/ DMG Maico-sponsored Grant Palenske wrestled his bike through a rocky canyon with a flat tire, while Open A Larry Woodruff negotiated a couple of rocky uphills. Tracy Walters found the off-camber trails in this area very suitable for a 175 and was making good time. Second 250cc A, Wheelsmith Maicosponsored Mike Adams returned to the hills and more virgin rock piles. while second Senior A Jay Tullis road raced his Honda on the fireroatls that foJlowed each set of rock piles. Located in this section was the third check of this loop. All A and B riders dropped points at this check. except Webb. Walters. Fullmer, and Wilson. Stopped at the reset after this check, first Four-stroke A, Kawasaki-mounted Fred Hayes rested. while first 250cc A. KRW/Super Seer/Kal-Gard/DMG Maico-sponsored Gamer Palenske left the last check of the loop and was screaming across the desert towartls the finish. .-4 00 O"l .-4 Results CCLASSES OPEN: 1.
