Reha straightened himself out and prepared to keep Darrel Brown's 500 Honda in view. At the end of the first lap, Hooper. held a one minute, 15 second lead over second· place rider Maahs. He had covered the course ·in 23 minutes averaging an amazing 31 mph. Maahs held a 45-second lead over McAll, who was riding his 125 Yamaha. Mike Ritchie came in in fourth. First Open bike and fifth overall was Brown with Reha behind him for second Open. Dave'Cosette was next for first 250cc, while Fritz Martin, who started dead last in the 250cc class, had worked his way up to second behind Cosette. • Hooper continued to spread the gap between himself and Maahs on lap two. Everything remained the same except for the 250cc class where Martin passed Cosette for the lead when Cosette's KTM developed a problem with the chain. By lap five, Hooper bad extended his lead to four minutes and 20 seconds civer Maahs. 'McAll continued to ride in third. Ritchie was having problems, ending up in the weeds at one point', and on the ground at another. In the 250cc class, Audie McCombs had worked his way past Cosette and Bruce Hardy for second. On lap six, Hoo~r held his largest lead over Maahs - five minutes and 15 seconds. It was also about this time that many riders commented that they started losing their concentration. Hooper stopped at one road control check out on the course for no apparent reason. The checker and Hooper knew each other well so when Larry stopped, the checker thought something was wrong and ran up to see if he could help. Out of the clear blue, Larry said, "What do you think of the spiraling cost and quality of onions in Bogata?" The checker just couldn't believe what he had heard, and all he coUId s.ay was, "What?" Hooper rode away laughing. Maahs was having his own problems kffping his mind on the business at hand on -lap six. He said, "I started daydreaming and all of a sudden McAll passed me. I couldn't catch back up to him." The longer the race went on, the faster McAll rode. Many riders commented that McAIl was haulingl On lap seven, the final lap, Hooper came in first with McAll in second. Brown thumped his way past Maahs for third overall and first Open. Second open and fifth overall was Reha. First 250cc was Martin despite the fact he rode the last lap on a flat front tire. Results EXHIBITION: 1. Lorry Hooper (Mei); 2. SIM MeAli lV"",); 3. LAKE PILLSBURY, cA, NOV. 7 Yamaha-mounted Rob Suttlif won the District 36 Cowbell Regional Enduro with a score of nine points. The event, hosted by the Hayward Motorcycle Cl~b, was also part of the Golden State Championship Enduro Series. The first loop of the enduro was designed to allow all riders to finish, while the second loop was designed to challenge the best. The plan worked, and 327 of the 466 entries finished, including all three Powder Puff entries. Dave .Bertram finished second overall and second in the Open A class by dropping three points more than Suttli£. This was Bertram's first ride since the Jackhammer Enduro when a stick was forced into his hand and pierced him almost through to the palm. Since Dave needed only a fourth overall to retain his District Number One plate, he can now go easy on that hand until next season. Matt Cullins won the 200cc A class with a score of 13, and Jeff Irwin best· ed the 250cc A class with a score of 14. Honda-mounted John Poor, Jr. thumped his way to Four-stroke A class victory with a score of 26. Open A rider Cliff Glidden receives special mention for his near trophy after fin· ishing with his human· powered KTM. Glidden's Austrian mount wasn't the only bike to run out of gas as the 54.4· mile second loop was awfully close to the 55·mile AMA regulation limit. Although the course was marked exceptionally well, many riders had trouble reading the arrows. While the Rocky dots stood out clearly, colorblind riders could not even see the Malcolm Smith arrows. The black arrow seemed to melt into the deep pink background and, when' posted in the shade, even riders. that weren't colorblind had trouble seeing which way the arrow pointed. Hayward Motorcycle Club president Walt Peterson says he was told by a number of A riders that the riders frequently st.opped at a tum and waited for another rider to arrive and show them the way. Peterson is disturbed by the problem and doesn't know what to do. Now that the popular Webco . arrows are unavailable, the only other I course arrows that he knows of are made back east. After posting a' sample of those arrows, he chose the Malcolm Smith arrows as more visible. Malcolm? Somebody? Help! The Hayward Motorcycle Club would like to thank this year's Cowbell committee leader Jerry "Buffalo" Losier (Vice President) and club members: Peterson, Dan Freitas (Treasurer) and Bruce Kelly. A very special thanks goes to the U.S. Forestry Service for what the club members feel is the best sup' port ever. And last, but not least, the club would like to thank the Daily City Brush Busters for handling rescue and communication, which included rescuing a motorcyclist with a broken leg. Support from groups like the Forestry Service and the Daily City Brush Busters is not only helpful, but is necessary for the future of our sport. o Results OVERALL: 1. R9b Sutliff IYaml. 200 A: 1.
