AUSTIN, TX, NOV. 1
Mother nature gave Austin's day
track the "deep" treatment for
Tommy ~onners' AMA District
20 year end point roundup. Week-

By Bob Bagwell
DENNISON, TX, NOV. S
After' three weeks of rain, Saturday night racing at Ross Downs
moved to Twin Cities Speedway
flat track and motocross here.

weather permitting.
Duane Duval had his way, winning
the 250cc Expert main event with
Jimmy Tarlton challenging him every
lap. Duval just closed the door and did
not look back until die checkered flag.
Shane Jolly and Scot Morgan put on
a battle for the 125cc main with Jolly
taking over on the last lap with Greg
Duval bringing up a close third.
Jolly led the BOcc main. from start to
finish. Steve Carlisle finished second
with Mike Hale third.
Greg Teague and Jimmy Kay put on
a .show that had everyone cheering in
the 60cc main. Teague took over the
lead and held off Kay for the win.

flew high over the jumps to tak,e wins
in the SOcc chus. Blane Thomas

Denver debuts
team speedway
By Sam Slideways
DENVER, CO, OCT. SO

Halloween night saw - many
. changes in th face of Denver
speedway.racing and an arena
full of all kinds of spooky char-
acters at the National Western
Arena.
For the first time this season, team
style racing was tried. It proved to be a
huge suc, cess for ride.rs and fans alike.
With the removal of the west wall, an
extra 15 feet of straightaway and some
1200 extra seats now available fQr the
fans set the stage for the finest racing
all season, bar nonel
Makeup for the teams was done by
random drawing. Colorado riders
Chris Reichardt and Mark Borgman
along with Utah riders, Bob Borg and
Tommy Dickerson made up Team A.
Local riders Allen Rhor, ~usty
Hannum, Ken Pieper and Scott
Ormiston made up Team B. Making
up Team C was Mark Corbett, Larry
Larson, Randy Lamirande and Brian
Hoel. The lineup for Team D was
Dave Pieper, Steve Robinson, Jim,
Troudt and Rick Steele.
From the very outset, it was obvious
that Team A would be the team to
beat with Borg and Borgman both
winning their heau. Team B was hot
in the action,_ staying close in the
poinu to Team A. Team D was still in
the hunt, also.
Having a super night, Bi>rgman on
the K&K Detailing/Super Seer Jawa
seemed unbeatable all night'long until
the match race when Bob Borg gave.
Borgman a real race with action for
the entire race.
Also having a good night overall,
Rusty Hannum on the Colorado
Concept Hair Design Jawa put on a
bunch of super rides, helping Team B
in the poinu battle.
By the end of the action, Team A
had things all sewed up with a nice
lead oYer Team B. With the hard
charging of Chris Reichardt on the
Gene Plue's/Brownell Dist./ Asaociated
Automotive {nd.-sponsored Godden
long rains cleared away leaving the
sandy track deep with loamy traction.
Bandera's "Flyin' Bryan" Taylor
made the season-ender his first posthospital race, Taylor opted for surgery
on a knee that occasionally popped
out of joint in order to be ready to put
his racing career on the road in 'S2. He
looked slightly off-form but smoked a
healthy field of Experu anyway.
El Paso's Maby McIntyre stuffed his
Yamaha to the front of the pack in the
first 250cc Expert moto. Taylor
pushed the familiar 1105 Suzuki into
second followed by Yamaha support/
Kasson Yamaha rider Rick Blackwell.
McIntyre reined his Yammie smoothly into the inside lines forcing Taylor
to ride the high wall berms wide open
in an effort to gain the lead.
Taylor's roller coaster style paid off.
He slammed the door on McIntyre as
they funneled onto the front straight.
The El Paso houhoe had to shut
down momentarily letting Taylor disappear.. Blackwell moved 'within
striking distance and went around
McIntyre only to get blown out of a
turn as McIntyre repassed.
Taylor slowed his pace to around
warp four and cruised in for the win.
McIntyre took second with Ricky
Glaser third after Blackwell's fall.
Blackwell burst out of .the gate at
the start of the second round. Blackwell's big lead down the start straight
disappeared when Taylor held the gas
on into the first turn and swept around
the ouuide.
.
Taylor grabbed the lead he would
hold to the flag, and Blackwell tucked
into second.
McIntyre gated back in the pack
and began bulling his way past the less
experienced riders. He worked up to
third, fell and worked up to third
again by the fall of the checkered flag.
Mike Clemenu and James Eldridge
faced off in the 125cc Pro class.
Clemenu, fresh from a top 10 finish in
the Rio Bravo Trans-USA Support
class, had his hands full. During one
lap, Clemenu and Eldridge each led
the race twice in 100 yardsl
Clemenu took the first moto but the
second was Eldridge's.
Mike Bradsahw, McIntyre and Jack
Beckham proved to be the fa,st guys at
the end of the first lap- of the Open
Expert race. Bradshaw had the lead
but the day after Halloween was not to
be a good day for him. His Husky
started doing tricks and treated him to
a soil sample.
McIntyre won easily after Beckham
was slowed by his steadily stretching
Maico. The frame backbone broke in
half, and the ends beating together
shortened it about two inches.
McIntyre looked like a sure winner
in the second moto but fell in the late
laps letting Bradshaw take the lead.
McIntyre tried hard to regain the lead
but fell short at the flag by inches.
All in all there was some fine racing.
Central Texans will be ready for the
beginning of the 'S2 series.
Sorry, no official resulu were
available.
Beckham buries
Austin night MX
By Karel Kramer
AUSTIN, TX, OCT. SI
Suzuki-mounted John Ham came
to the Austin Night Track ready
to do business but ended up having enough bad luck to make a
grown man cry. During,pr.actice, Ham
hit a rider pulling off the track. As if
that wasn't bad enough, the rider was
someone he was pitted withl
After the usual problems that
accompany "Mickey Mouse" modifications, Ham made it to the line with the
front fender from his YZ125 and bent
bars and grabbed the Expert holeshot.
Austin's Experts are usually run,
and scored together, so it was absolutely nobody's surprise when Ham lost his
lead. The seemingly unstoppable Jack
Beckham put the whip to his 490
Maico and .0uthoTSepowered Ham's
250 Suzuki.
No one seemed to have told Ham
that Beckham was supposed to win because he began trying to repass.
Midway through the moto, Ham's
front wheel began to jerk to a stop
whenever it left the ground. He couldn't
diagnose ~ problem at first and looked
at theengme.
When Ham left the track for more
quick repairs, Mike Farmer took over
the second place position followed by
Jerry Farmer. Jerry had to borrow a
bike from local Yamaha merchant Sill
Kasson momenu before the race and
was having a little trouble adapting as
he had never ridden an Open bike
before.
Beckham took an utlch.allenged win
followed by Mike and Jerry Farmer.
Beckham pulled a giant wheelie to
grab the start of the second moto, but
a determined Ham cut inside to grab
the lead.
Beckham held tight to Ham's back
fender. He got his chance in the infield
where he powered around the outside,
taking a lead that he would never surrender.
Jerry Farmer was biding time' in
third but decided that it was too early
for Ham to relax. Ham ~ the same
line through the infield the next lap
around and got passed ouuide by
Farmer.
Farmer could not stay with Beckham, but he held onto second followed
by Ham.
The final results read Beckham,
Jerry Farmer, Mike Farmer and Mitch'
Mitchell.
In other action, James Woodmansee
put his Honda in front of every lap of
the 250cc Novice contest. Wylie Evans
and Larry Reiniger didn't lead every
lap but they did win their classes
convincingly.
