WOODLAND, WA, NOV. 7
We had a celebrity in our midst
today in the Open Intermediate
and Over the Hill classes. Carl
Cranke (KTM) has decided to
dabble in motocross after many successful years of chasing Gold in ISDE
competition. He gave Dave Eakin
(Hon) a real run in the fIrst Open Intermediate race for a while. Then Eakin
came out of the woods with a good
breathing space and along came
Cranke with a tell-tale dab of din on_
his shoulder. He showed us how he did
it in the second OTH moto when he
did
wild somersault over the bars
right in front of the tower for all to see.
He spent the rest of the day moving
gingerly and watching while Mike
Perry (Yam) took the OTH win and
Eakin topped the Open Intermediates.
Eric Hall (Yam) held a comfonable
fIrst plaa; through the entire fIrst
moto of the .1 25cc Pro class. Jeff Cropper (Suz) held a steady second until the
last few laps when Stacy Thornton
(Suz) consumed a little bit of the distance. Cropper later stated that his
gearbox was not properly functioning,
forcing him to coast helplessly into
cornen-t etc. _ . .
Somebody must have done some
quick repairs. :The second moto was a
new game. Hall again shot to the lead
with Cropper and Scott Tyler (Yam)
joining him in a pull away from the
paclr.. Hall -held a little edge for a
couple of laps, but Cropper was
already pulling up on him when Tyler's
bike quit on the fnth lap.
Cropper glued himself to Hall's rear
fender, but Hall remained completely
unruffled and gave no chance to pass.
Fmally, Cropper attempted to go inside
in a tight comer and found there was
no inside. He caught hiS foot and
twisted his leg enough for a DNF. The
last three laps turned into an equally
fIerce fIght between Thornton and
Dennis Ostriem (Yam) for second
place. Thornton nabbed it for his 19th
birthday present.
The fIrst 250cc Pro moto was almost a ho-hum parade. John Christian
(Yam) rode to an obscene lead. Tim
Michlitsch (Kaw) got himself together
to take second from Jayme Nickle
(Yam). That was about the highlight
of the race.
The second moto was no more comr.etitive but it was highly eventful.
After the fIrst moto, a handful of rocks
were given to Christian with the suggestion that he load his pockets to handicap him a little so the rest of the pack
could get a little closer. Having no
piclr.ets, he must have placed them in
his head because when he was out
front in the second lap of race two, he
executed a brain-fade, rocks-in-head
trip over the bars when he stuffed a
berm. All the guys were gone when he
got moving:
Michlitsch led and Jon Jacobson
(Suz) was second. Jacobson lost his way
going into a right-hander when the
sun blinded him. By the time he got
re-oriented and back on the track, it
was his tum to be last.' Barney
Newman (Suz) was now second but not
for long. He pulled up with a broken
chain adjuster. Nickle had a brief turn
at second before Christian took the
position and a seized engine took him
out. Michlitsch put in a flawless ride,
and Christian was unable to cut into
his lead this time.
Christian came back to take two
wins in Open Pro even though he was
a
minus third gear. Arne Hettman
(Hon) andJayme Nickle sorted out the
second spot with Hc::ttman taking the
one that counted most.
