Speaking Qf goodies for the Nov. 28 Bto-V III poker run, the list of merchandise awards is growing by leaps and hounds. Honda chipped in with ,six windbreakers and 10 hats, while Yamaha donated 12 leather belts, 10 windbreakers, 22 T-shirts and 50 Cable Lubers. Poker run fmishers will draw for their cards at the Blue Diamond Rd. off-ramp fInish area until ~ p.m., and the top three hands will receive cash prizes of $150, $100 and $50. Then all riding ticket numbers will be put in a bucket and the merchandise prizes (lots of Cycle News products plus all announced donations) will be drawn for until they're all awarded. As of press day, fi've riders have been confInned for Maico's 1982 National motocross team, and there are a bunch of new faces there. Carlos Serrano rejoins the marque to ride 250s joined by Scott Johnson and Andy Stacy. Mickey Kessler and Gary Pustelak have been signed to ride 500s along with another, as yet unnamed, rider. With the V-8 .ngine concapt outlawed by the National Motorcycle Racing Association, V-8 advocate Russ Collins will hit the drag racing Top Fu.1 wars with - get this - a Top Fuel Gold Wing. Actually. only the cylinder heads are required from the Honda. the rest will come together from CoMins to produce an inline four. How that will be mounted in the frame is not known at this time. In the tradition of Top Fu.I. the machine will be super. charged .and run on nitro fed through injection. According to reliable source,. Suzuki and Vance-Hines Racing have signed a contract for 1982. The contract r.portedly calls for Terry Vance and Byron Hin.s to campaign Suzukis in Pro Stock and Top Fuel drag racing competition (but not in the Super Modified class, wh.r. Mike Phillips rode their bike last y.arl. as well as do the engine work on the Team Hammer .ndurance road racing .ffort. 0') ~ CN I-< CIJ ..c .8 CIJ 1981 u CIJ o It's hard to believe, but there are only three months or so before the AMA Grand National Championship/Winston Championship/Winston Pro Ser· ies begins with the Feb. 6·7 Houston Astrodome short track and TT. And speaking of same, Bill Spencer ("The Sidney Greenstreet of District ~6'" according to announcer Roxy Rockwood) will be organizing rhe annual tour from the San Francisco Bay area to Houston. Dick Burleson's AMA National Championship Enduro Series title string began in 1974, the same year Burleson won his first ISDE gold medal. Interestingly. in every year Burleson won an ISDE gold medal he also won the enduro title. That's eight and eight. The Motorcycle Industry Council has recently published its 1981 Motorcycle Statistical Guide, its fifth edition of the reference work. It is 48 pages of all kinds of sta tistics covering 1980. Highlights include such info as that in 1980 there w(;re 7.4 million motorcycles in use, the motorcycle retail marketplace estimated economic value was $8.~ billion, and new motorcycles accounted for $1.9 billion. Suzuki dealers who recently r.turned from a trip to Japan r.port they were shown a turbocharged 650cc Suzuki. The bike is reportedly scheduled for release in '82. The new California Desen Conserva. tion Area advisory commi~ee met Nov. 1~-14 in Riverside, and our man on the scene reported that, "Things look good on the (Desert) Plan Amendments, including the Johnson Valley to Stateline (revised Barstow to Vegas) and Scirocco Summit to Parker race routes. The hoard also took a position against the transfer of any more land to State Parks and Recreation for the Red Rock State Park, and will probably vote agaiflSt such a transfer in their next meeting at EI Centro." .... 00 .... OK, Honda has a 500 turbo. Yamaha and Suzuki a 650, so what does Kawasaki have? Would you believe a turbocharged 750? "Based on preliminary budget meetings and such, I would say that we (Harley-Davidson) should have as strong a dirt track effort in 1982 as we did in 'B1," said H-D's Dick O'Brien. "I'm looking at a two rider effort and, hopefully, a bit more help for riders in the field. As of now, things look promising although I'm not ready to mention any names yet and probably won't until about December 1. You can count on one thing, we're going racilig." .
