CORONA, CA, NOV. 6 MINIINT: 1. " - EbIng IK8wI; 2. W_ _ The start of another season of high school motocross racing officially got underway at Corona with last year's champs North High taking home top honan. It looks as though Nonh High will be the team to beat this year after they gathered a 11'2-point lead but, as it is said, it's only the beginning. One of the top point scoren of the evening was Upland's Pat Weber (Suz) after compiling tWo fJrst-place victories in hoth the 250cc and 500cc Senior classes. In the fmt moto of the 250cc Senior class Moreno Valley's Brian Griewe (Hus) grabbed the holeshot followed closely by Weber and Nonh's Scott Bums (Suz). But by the end of the fust lap Weber slid out, dropping back to third and handing Griewe a comfonable lead. Quickly Weber remounted and got back into the race. In the laps that followed Weber worked his way to second, but it wasn't until the fina1 moments of the race that he managed to catch up to Griewe. The resulting duel reached a climax as the checkered flag came into - sight. The two riden came into the last tum locking hand1eban, with Weber coming out on top. They were prepared to continue their battle in the second moto but it wasn't to be. Weber grabbed the holeshot and was never headed on his way to his second win. Griewe held second throughout the moto followed by Scott Bums. Results HIGH SCHOOl MINI NOV: 1. Child _ 16 2. Brien ~ lHuol; 3. I~I; , 2. enolg 00lm1d0r lYeml; 3. Dina Gr.-1K8wl. MINI SA: 1. The three-mile course is almost com· pletely accessible by Arroyo's watering system so the course at least starts out dust free. It's especially dust free at "Lake Arroyo," the water and mud hole which forms in the low side of the big sweeper right after the scoring table. A few. riden took unplanned baths in the early races when there was only a one line around the swamp. Robbie Nolin hardly noticed the swamp in his romp in the up to 200cc race. Nolin shot Into the lead at the drop of the flag and left everyone else wondering what to do abOut second place. Nolin, currently number two U5cc Pro in CMC and sti11 in hip school, has earned himse1f a Yamaha support ride for 1982. He showed the talent that attracted the factory by finishing a1mOIt a half lap ahead of the second place bike despite a 10second stop to talk to his tuner and a subleqent 20-second stop to take on somegasl Troy Smith had the tint shot at second and was a few wheels ahead of Jeff Prieur at the end of lap one. Smith lost it momentarily in the super slippery hairpin right .after the swamp and Prieur popped by before Smith could recover. Q.uinton Smith rushed up to try to also cash in on Troy's misfortune but Troy was up and moving .and Q.uinton. fell into .founh. Although the three of them accordianed about the course for the rest of the race, there were no changes and the Experts finished Nolin, Prieur, Troy Smith, and Q.uinton Smith. Not to be outdone by the young Mr. Nolin. Veteran Bill Saltzman put much the same moves on the Veterans and Senion by leaving them aD at the gate and running away to the win. It did this old desen racer's hean good to see Bill and the famous (infamous?) Checken leathen and belmet out in front. By the end of the second lap, the finishing order had been established with Bryon Farnswonh holding second behind the distant Saltzman and Bill MillaT and Chuck Woody in third and founh, respectively. When the flag dropped on the 250cc race, Amateur Jeff Hays got a beautiful holeshot and scampered over the . start hill fine As they crossed the road and entered the west MX track, Expen Trace Willis powered by Hays and ended.1ap one in the lead. As they went past Lake Arroyo and the swamp, Willis slid out in the powdery hairpin and Hays was back in the lead. Willis bounced up in time to prevent third running Steve Blakely from also getting by, but Blakely was very close and determined to press his new advantage. By the next lap, he had
