I House of Honda-sponsored Bob Gillian ~ook advantage of the ill fortune of Ron Hume to capture the win in a special three-lap, six-mile ATC exhibition race run with the Superbikers III motorcycle' race before approximately 2,000 spectators and ABC Wide World of sports cameras. Hume led much of the race, only to come to a halt two turns from the finish line with a seized motor. In a battle that went right down to the line, Da!e Robertson staved off Bill Godfrey by In~hes to take sec:on~. ~he only wom,m In the field, VIcki Shipman. came home fourth. In a frantic scuffle before the race began, Hume, who seized in practice, rebuilt the top end of his ATC250R with the held of Honda of Oceanside owner Fred Germain, who also drove to his shop for parts. No new piston was available, so the seized piston was sanded down and reinstalled. 6 Hume led off the start with Gillian and Duce Stewan right on him. After the course left the Carlsbad pavement a.nd was halfway through the ~rt sectI~n: there was a crash that Inv~lved GillIan, ~tewart and another nder. Though It was a spectacular endo, none of the riders were hurt. Following the crash Hume was left with a healthy lead over Honda North County's Robertson and Honda of Oceanside's Godfrey. After the crash Gillian was on the move and up to third by the middle of lap two. By lap three he was in second and closing on Gillian. Following the din section, only a few hundred yards of pavement remained in the race. But coming out of the chicane at the end of the dirt, Hume seized and the win was Gillian's. This exhibition race was sponsored by the San Diego County Honda Motorcycle dealers. All contestants rode ATC250Rs. Although the race was filmed by ABC, there is no guarantee that it will be aired. m
