TEN YEARS AGO The double-engine Honda Hawk streamliner made a one-way run at Bonneville of 285 mph. However the 'liner later hit some soft salt and crashed, so a two-way official record could not be set. Malcolm Smith and Gunnar NillIon teamed to take the motorcycle victory in the NORRA Baja 1000, as well as second overall behind Parnelli Jones' fast Bronco. Eighty miles from the finish Nillson hit a rock and was thrown into a bed of cactus, and though huge splinters penetrated to the bone and could not be removed without medical attention, he made it across the line. Second bike was the four-stroke Honda 350 twin of Bill Silverthorn and Gene Fetty, while Phil Bowen and Mike Patrick utilized a two-stroke Yamaha 350 twin to talte third. English factory AJS rider Vic Eastwood made an appearance at the CMC's Saddlebaclt mOlOCJ'OlSS, sweeping all three motos of the 500cc Expert class. The Federacion Motocicliste Internationale approved the Formula 750 road racing cataegory, with world championship status set for 1974. Despite suffering a broken toe in the fmal moto, Husky's Heikki Mikkola collected the overall win at the TransAMA Series round in St. Peters, MO. Suzuki's Joel R.oben, winner of seven Trans-AMA events the previous year, won his fint moto of 1971 for a second overall placing. Top American was Brad Lackey (CZ) at 13th, right behind R.oger neco.ter (Suz). Tim Han (Mai) won the 250cc National class. Mike Kidd bested J .C. Kl1lXllleyer and Jon Minonno to win the 250cc GP class in a road race in Green Valley, TX. In other action, Tommy Byan was the winner over Pee Wee Gleuon in 250cc Production.
