Dan Smith captured the loo's
M.C. 14th annual hare 'n' bound,
and in doing so captured the DS7 desen Open class championship.
The fint loop was SO miles and at
9:05 a.m. the banner 11.......-1. Smith
kicked his bike and ~kfded again.
F'mally, his machine came to life and
smith was on his way to a very
rewarding win.
The start was wide open out acrou
the valley, but with enough.rocks and
rain ruts to keep you on your toes.
About a mile past the bomb, the
course became tight in the rocks
leading to check one. One mile past
that check, running fU'lt was Huskymounted Open rider Smith with Lee
Schefen (Yam) 15 seconds behind.
Another Husky rider, Brett Howell,
was maltin/{ his move, 20 seconds
behind ·Scheffen. F'U'It Vet Bill
Saltzman came next and Dave Chase
was pushing him hard. Howard
McCasland on a KTM was sixth and
looking good. Ed Pierce, first 2SOcc
was next. Fint Senior rider was Nate
Sciacqua and he was on the throttle.
Meanwhile, Dan Ashcraft on a Husky
was running back in the 40a due to
fouling a plug on the bomb run.
The Novice start was at 9:24.
Beginner John Butera was glad when
the banner finally dropped. He kicked
his bike 10 many times before the
banner went up trying to start it, that
the one last kick as the banner
dropped was a real effort. Thankfully
it started and Butera was on his way.
Beginner Oliver Rathlein took the lead
on a Yamaha 465 one mile past check
one with Novice Guy Kibbe next.
Getting it on in third place was Novice
Dan Seagondollar.
Dan Smith, increasing his overall
lead, was having an outstanding ride.
Dan Ashcraft was really working hard
playing catch·up. His biggest problem
was trying to get around Senior class
rider Gary Charters. Dan later said Gary
was really on it and gave him big
trouble. Scott Postma was having his
own problems riding his dad's CanAm for the fint time. He later said he
was ove.nhooting turns and bouncing
over the whoop-de-doos.
Coming into home cbeclt off the fint
loop, it was still Dan Smith. Dan had a
one and a half minute lead over the
next rider. Lee Scheffen came in next
with Bill Saltzman third, five minutes
behind. Hard charging Brett Howell
was fourth. Howard McCuland
looking great as always was fifth. F'U'It
250cc rider and sixth overall was Ed
Pierce. Dan Ashcraft had worked his
way up to IIC'Venth overall. Next bike in
was Senior Nate Sciacqua; he was
having a great ride. Nate was followed
by fint Amateur Murray Kapko who
had it together for this race.
Hard charging Gary Charten was
fint Senior "C" bike to home check.
Leaving home check, the 250cc Senior
class was continuing to be the most
competitive of the day as Ron Rebo
(Yam), AI Guzman (Suz), and Dick
Postma (KTM) all got to home check
within one minute of each other. Fint
woman in was Lomi Vincent. Fint
Trailbike was David Duke.
The leCond loop was 25 miles and as
Bill Saltzman ~t'it, if. you had to run
on a flat tire tIIii was-the COUJ'le for it.
Smith still had things under control,
except for ovenhooting a couple of
ledges that could have been marked
better. Scheffen was keeping Dan's
dust in sight, but couldn't close the
gap. Third and fourth positions were
changing as Vet Saltzman was
dropping back with a rear flat. Howell
lost the COUJ'Ie and alao a few places.
McCasllmd was coming on hard and
was now third overall. Ashcraft was
still working hard and moving up.
Amateur Kaplr.o had moved up to
eighth overall. Senior rider Sciacqua
didn't show any signa of tiring and
moved up another notch.
The daah for fint Novice was still
going on with 2SOcc rider Dan Seagondollar holding off Open rider Guy
Kibbe. Still riding hard was Lorni
Vincent, keeping the throttle on
knowing that if abe let up Lori Farmer
would be ready to make her move.
For Smith, the checkered flag was in
sight with a four and a half minute
lead as he crossed the finish line. The
victory was sweet as 17·year-old Dan
not only won the race, but he tied up
the numher one plate in the Open
class this year. Dan, who is sponsored
by Husky and rides out of Kern Sport
Cycle of Baltenfield, is the youngest
rider to hold the Number One plate in
the Open class in District 57 desert
racing. We congratulate you.
Second rider in was Scheffen. Lee
said his only trouble on the second
loop was Smith: He couldn't catch
him! McCasland had a great race and
came in third overall. Next rider in
was a very tired Dan Ashcraft, fint
2SOcc, having moved up to fourth
overall. Next was Veteran Bill
Saltzman at fifth overall. Ed Pierce,
leCond 2SOcc, was sixth overall. Senior
Sciacqua honored the seventh place
spot. Holding down the eighth spot
and fint Amateur was Kapko. Howell
still came in ninth after having lost the
course.
Fint "C" bike honon went to Dave
Allen. Fint Senior "C" bike was
Charten. Bebo took the 250cc Senior
class with Guzman right on his tail.
Postma took third 250cc Senior after a
rather unique get-off. Fint woman in
was Vincent with Lori Farmer second.
In the Novice race, Seagondollar
(250cc) took first overall with Open
rider Kibbe second overall. Fint Trailbike honon went to Duke. First
Beginner was Oliver Rathlein, with
Craig Rimlinger second and Ron
Shuler third.
Brandenburg rides
to Iron Horse win
By Larry Woodruff
RED MOUNTAIN, CA, OCT. II
Kim Brandenburg rode his 200cc
machine to an AA class victory
and overall over several nationally ranked riders in the last California Racing Club family enduro be·
fore the Checkpoints National Enduro
Nov. 1 in the same Red Mountain area.
Kim was the only one to zero all three
loops, losing just 28 seconds. Second
overall John Pomo (Open AA) came in
20 seconds ahead of Husky factory rider Rick Munyon on a 250cc. BothJohn
and Rick lost a point.
Loop one took the riders out of the
pits west across Trona Rd. and under
the railroad tracks a couple of times
before heading north towards Ridgecrest. After crossing back over Trona
Rd. near the now closed Charlie's
Place, the trail looped back to the pits.
Kenny Kemp OUllCored all comen
by dropping just five seconds to take
first one loop overall and top 200cc C
under 16 brass. One tick slower was
the first one loop gal, Kay Hopkins, in
the 200cc B Women class. Mike Chamberlain, Jr. and Eric Wicker tied for
third overall and first Mini C at eight
seconds lost along with fU'St Mini A
Robert Wranoslty.
. The second loop ~ollowed the gas
line road south up mto the foothills
and then across Trona Rd. into the
picturesque painted desert area before
heading into the infamous "Pumpkin
Patch." The "Patch" is saturated with
football and basketball size lava rocks.
This area proved to be the undoing of
many riders. The rest of the loop consisted of rolling hills and lOme open
desert.
Out of five zeros, Joe Dion's four
seconds really looked good. Good
enough to take fint two looper and
Open C Vet. Morgan Kavanaugh (first
Open C) lost 22 seconds to take second
overall ahead of fint 250cc C Bob Farr
(24 seconds). Randy Kemp (second
250cc C) and Ken Willa han (third
250cc C) followed at fourth and fifth
overall respectively. A total of three
seconds separated all three 250 Criders.
Ginger Smith (125cc A Woman lost a
commendable 5.75 en route to edging
out Lori Edmundson on her 250 Maico
by two seconds for top A woman.
The start of the third loop was north
of the pits and across the railroad
tracks that run the length of the valley.
The course led directly into the footlulls, up Loco Canyon and into the
"serious enduro stuff." After smacking
a few rocks the riden went back down
across the tracks and into the sand
hills, home of the legendary Invaders
Downhill and the Pucker DownhiUs. A
trip down Pucker two and a few lesser
hills, a Cjuick run through the rollers
and the finish line polished off the
loop.
One second behind Munyon in
fourth overall was DMG Maico speedster Garner Palenske, fresb off his
honeymoon.
Congratulations
to
Garner and Becky from all your
enduro friends. Paul Clipper took first
200cc A honors away from Kurt Buder
by coming in fifth overall. Kurt's
second place points put a definite
wrap on the 1981 200cc class number
one plate.
