Meyer and Tripes diced for the lead till the end of the third lap when Meyer ovenhot a berm. Meyer quicldy returned to the race ahead of Nolin and Maki battling for third. Nolin opened a RDa1l lead on Maki after dicing for the tint four Iape. Tripes held hia lead to take the overall. Meyer finiIbed KCOIId but Iaat overall when he'cut about 10 feet of the track after overshooting the berm on lap three. Nolin took second overall with a 5-5. Malti founh overall with a 4-4. Benevidez rode on to take the win with Gerig finishing second. Relucio third and Carlson foum. Carlson quickly took the lead in the second moto followed by Gerig, 8eDeYidez and Relucio. Gerig puled Car1aon for the lead going ower the new KPRI triple jump. Benevidez pulled up with Carbon on the fourth lap to make a thrft-way battle for first. However. Benevidez ataned having engine troubles on hiI Can-Am at the stan of the fifth lap and dropped off the pace. Car1aon regained the lead on the back side of lap six and held to take the win. MaDDing rode coDliatently placing fifth in both motoa for fourth overall. At the ltan of the fint moto of the Open Pro cia. it was Eric MacCracken (Yam) who grabbed an early lead followed by Bill Keefe. Bob Elliot (Suz) and Phil Taboada (Suz). MacCracken extended his lead never to be challenged. for the win. Second wmt to Keefe. while third and founh wmt to Elliott and Taboada. Motu two saw MacCracken steal the lead again chued by Elliott, Keefe and Taboada. ThiI time around Keefe put the preIIIIJ'e on MacCracken early in the race. It wam't until the tenth lap when MacCracken finally gave in to Keefe. From here on in the poIitiona ltayed the same as Keefe took the win. Once again Elliott and Taboada finished third and fourth. The Itart of the 125c:c Pro action got underway wben Troy Blake (Yam) rocketed into the lead followed by Dean Cates (SOl), ~ike Tripes (Yam) and Gary Din:U (Yam). Cates slipped by the leader on the KCOIId 'but out thrft Iapelater, handing the back to Blake. The batt1r for the lead heated up wben Tripes. Blake and Dircb began trading poIitio... The race fmal1y ltabilized by the time the checkered flag appeared with Blake in front of Dircb and Tripes. At the stan of motu two it was again Blalte who grabbed the holeshot chased by Dircks, Beier, and Tripes. Blalte held on to the lead throughout the race concluding his ride with a perfect 1·1 tally. CA, OCT. 11 Rain might do a lot of good, but it just never helps make a successful rnotoe::nB, and the Old Tuners really had a lean turnout for our DeAnza motocn.a. The b1ealed stuff just kept coming down all during practice and the fint moto causing a lot of slipping and sliding. Old Timer Ed Michetti of the Malten cl.... and also operator of DeAnza, gave us 12 laP.' on a track that was well prepared with a double stadium jump thrown in for excitement. There were five races. and things were ower by 12:50 p.m. Malter B1ackie Len took the lead in moto one but 10It it to Dan SallChez on lap one. ThiI didn't clinch things. however, as Bladie made a comeback on the Iaat lap and took that tint place win. Dan Sanchez was right in there for second. Lou Sorenson took fint place in both Expert motoI. All didn't 10 perfectly _ooth for Sorenson, though. There was a restart of moco two becaue of Lou crashing right at the Itarting line. Despite injuries. Lou picked up and wmt back fOl' a fint. Hal Grady a1Io bad a problem - a leaky tTaDPDieioa - buz he. too, walt on and got two KCOIIda. Ed joJma took third in moto one and Gerald Hutchilon third in moto two. Ray Amold of the Amateur DiviIion took the hoJrIhot and was in the lead for four Iape until Bob klan puled by. Bob just kept that power on until he had fint aecured. The aecond moto Itaned out with Arnold once again in the lead, but this time there was no paaaing him. Ray took firat. and Bob came in with a fait second. Novice Howar.d Zimmerman led the action in both motOl one and two. Noc only did he lead things. but he a1Io ran away with both races. CA, OCT. 11 TIle sixth annual National Motosports Association's FaD Nationals kicked off at Arroyo Cycle Park. U.S. Suzuki is once again the major donor. offering thrft new 1982 Suzuki motorcyclea. Co-lponson include Cycle-Am and Bel·Ray. In all there is $6000 in awarda and prizes. including a trip to Hawaii. lt rained the evening before the race .and lightly during the morning. The reaulting muddy cOnditiODl affected all cl_, but eapecially the smaller machinea. Kyle Lewis was the molt IUcceaaful racer of the day with thrft fint place wins. He won every moto tbat he entered in both of the Junior Cycle Stock and Modified 9-11 races, plus a )·2 win in the 80cc Modified 9-11 event. The Junior Cycle races were made even IDOI'e interelting becaue the 6-8 c:1aIa riden were on the track at the same time. In the Stock race LewilI ran all the way in the lead with Shane Hunt and Kevin Hei.er after him. Taylor Martin feU becaue of the mud and was I'lUDIIIed by another rider. Hunt was after Lewia oace again in the final moto but was unable to catch him. Hei.er was delayed as he ran into Buddy Antunez of the 6-8 cl... and then Anthony French ran into them to make matten worse. Two 'perfect scores gave Len the Stock win ower Hunt and Frank Buck. "King Richard" Suton and Dustin EVlUII won the trophies in the 6-8 race. Shaun KalOl was Lewis' main COID~titor in the Junior Cycle Modified 9-11 event. KalOl took hia R&D Suzuki right behind Lewis when the checkered ~ came out in the fint moto and tried desperately to puB Lewis in the final moto. He tried to cuz him off on a berm but the plan bad6red and lta10I hit the pound.
