Ron Sun and Joey Schlag in the first 500cc moto. Cantaloupi, after losing his brakes when the pads came off the shoes, held on for sixth while teammates Bell and Rick Burgett finished a close 7-8. Ninth with a super ride through the pack was David Bailey, the Moto-X Fox rider who had problems at the gate and was a lonely last out on his '82 Kawasaki -KX250. Honda's Steve Wise rounded out the top 10. The second moto got underway with 1981's second dual title winner gunning away from the gate in front again. Bell, Maico's Carlos Serrano, Bailey, Honda's Jim Gibson and Super Seer Suzuki· mounted Gary Semics went down in a first tum pileup. Hansen took the chase in second be- . hind Glover as Shultz fought to hold off Barnett and Cantaloupi did likewise with Burgett. Barnett didn't want to waste any time and let Glover get any more ground over him due to the dust ("It was like riding wide open with your eyes closed," Barnett quipped later.), and he quickly put Shultz back to fourth. Hansen became Barnett's next victim when the Suzuki ace snuck past in the section before the uphill at the 10minute mark. After that, only dust separated Glover and Barnett with Glover aiding Barnett's cause when he fell twice in the same comer. "Everything went good in the first moto," said Glover, "then in the second moto 1 fell twicel Every time 1 turned around 1 lost two or three (seconds)." Despite the slowly shrinking gap be· tween them, though, Glover had enough of a lead to lay claim to the victory. Hansen rode to a strong thirdplace fmish in front of Hannah, whose shock had gone out as well as being bothered by dust. "I went up before the first lap and stopped 'cause 1 didn't know which way to go," he joked. Cant!lloupi, who experienced the same brake problems in this moto, fin· ished fifth. "The last 10 minutes, I came on strong," said Burgett. Strong enough for sixth. "It blows me away; I've never felt like that before." Wise picked up the seventh-place spot ahead of Suzuki's Marty Smith who" ... had bad starts, but I worked my butt off." Gibson got ninth while Bell overcame his first turn flooring to earn 10th. 500cc Support Honda's Ron Sun got the holeshot in the first support moto while the king of the support class, Danny Chandler, fell into position right behind him. Speaking of falling, a bit -of that happened on the way to the first tum as riders tangled bars and LOP Honda rider Mike Brown, Jim Ellis and Honda's Rich Coon ended up on the ground. Magoo quickly found his way to the front of the pack but couldn't shake Sun. Behind them, a three-rider dice took shape between Dave Wood on a PCP Yamaha, Yamaha support rider Kenny Keylon and Honda-mounted Larry Wosick. After 10 minutes of racing, Keylon was at the head of the trio before shaking them off and snagging Sun. However, ~eylon experienced difficulties shortly afterwards and dropped from the front· runners to finish 15th. That put Sun back into second, but he was getting heavy pressure from Wosick. Cycle Riders Supply's Joey Schlag had moved steadily forward from eighth on the opening lap and by this time, was in fourth and closing on a single-shock KTM he'd received just a couple of days before. Wosick dropped Sun to third halfway through the moto, and suddenly, the front four were a tightly bunched quartet. Wosick erred a few laps later and fell to fourth as Schlag took the opportunity to tuck in behind Chandler, who said later, "I rode to win. That's what I came for. 1 didn't care how much by, if it was two bikelengths or what. "I knew the way the track was, if I went too fast I'd crash." Obviously, he knew just how fast he had to go. Wosick recovered in time to move back up to third by the checkers, though. Ellis' spirited charge through the ranks netted him fifth followed by Maico Northwest's Eric Eaton and Eric McKenna on a new Yamaha YZ490. Wood finished eighth ahead of Keystone MX Works Yamaha rider Jeff Hicks and Gold Coast Yamaha rider Keith Oelerich. Ellis was sure he didn't want to play catch-up in the second moto and insure that by leading the start, Hicks and Sun in tow. Sun fell after a few turns, though, _ which let Wood, Brown, Chandler and Schlag come through third through sixth. Chandler climbed steadily up dis· placing the riders ahead of him until he passed Ellis for the lead juSt before the halfway point in the race. Ellis ref~d to let Magoo go free, however, and positioned himself within striking distance for the remainder of the moto. With a few laps to go, Ellis surged ahead and his momentum carried him past Chandler who was content to finish second. Ellis' win gave him second overall, breaking the tie with Wosick, who had gotten a fair start and fought his way to third. Hicks rode in fourth ahead of Schlag, Sun and Brown. Keylon, Coon and McKenna rounded out the top 10. • Results 250 INTERNATIONAL; 1. Brae Glovef (Vamll-1; 2. N1l1fk Barnett ISuzl 2-2; 3. Donnie Hansen IHanl 4-3; 4. Bob Hanneh lYoml3-'l; 5.
