AMA Trans-USA MX Series: FInal round Glover grabs two for series tit/e,IMagoo' storms to support win By Mark Kariya SACRAMENTO, CA, OCT. 18 Yamaha's Broc Glover enjoyed a pair of wins to wrap up the Trans-USA MX Series title in the series finale at Prairie City OHV Park, the final outdoor race in the AMA's motocross race 6 schedule this year. The Trans· USA c~own marked t he seeond 1981 tItle for the newest 500cc National MX champ. who would now like nothing better t~n to win the year's last Supercrosa race In front of a hometown crowd at Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego, CA on November 14. "My first priority was to win the series," Glover said, "but I felt so good in practice, I decided to ride as hard as I could. "It (the race win) feels as good as any 'cause everybody's there, sort of like cream of the crop racing." Second on the day, and in the series, went to Mark Barnett who ran second all day aboard his works Suzuki. Barnett's teammate Darrell Shultz, who came into the day's race second in points, suffered a first moto spill and a blown shock in the second round which squelched his chances at a top placing. Glover's teammate Mike Bell was third in points, but bad starts on a track where dust became a factor hampered his efforts to a 7-10 eighth overall. In the 500cc Support class, Danny "Magoo" Chandler, who had neatly sewn up the title last weekend at Rio Bravo, went 1-2 for the win on his LOP Honda 480. Honda factory rider Jim Ellis took second in the series and the day with a winning second moto ride after a first moto fifth while another Honda rider, Larry Wosick, saw threes all day for third. Prairie City is the site of Hangtown, the year's opening outdoor race, but the course used under today's warm and sunny skies was run backwards with a few new sections added and older ones deleted. It was a fast horsepower track that became fairly dusty in the second round of matos which limited visibility for thoee in mid·pack, putting more of a premium on good starts. 250cc International Glover, Scott Burnworth (on an aircooled works Yamaha with the older mono setup) and Barnett led the pack out of the fmt tum in moto one. GIOYel" quickly began increasing the distance on Barnett, who moved to second before long, and ran without challenge the entire moto. The moto win was all Glover needed to clinch the series title. Donnie Cantaloupi put his water· cooled factory Yamaha mono into a cloee trailing position behind Barnett before the first lap ended. Burnworth, Honda's Donnie Hansen, Bell, Honda R&D rider Ron Turner and Shulu knifed through the signal area behind them. By the next time around, Hansen had pluRl{ed himself into fourth while burnworth would eventually drop to 14th. Shulu was on the gas and moved up on Hansen a little at a time, and when Hansen passed Cantaloupi half· way through the moto, "Shu" busied himself with trying to find a way around him. That finally happened with about 10 minutes left, and by that time, Yamaha's Bob Hannah, who'd gotten a mediocre start on the Link'suspended bike, was up and challenging. When Shultz bobbled and stopped momentar· ily in a tight left·bander, the Hurricane gave his clutch lever a quick fan or two and was gone and into fourth place. Hannah moved up another notch when on the fmallap, HaDIeD fell over in the tight, bermed left at the ligna! area, dropping to fifth. However, Shultz alid out on the final go 'round, giving fourth back up to Hamen.
