Stay tunedl At the Ascot Winston Pro Series National, announcer Roxy Rockwood called Gary Scott's bid for the title, "Scott's last hurrah." Scott said, "Bull, I'm not going to quit by any means. This (failure to win the title) just makes me tougher. You better believe I'll have a stronger program next year." Unknown to Gary Scott was that his wife Donna had taken the Number One plate he, had won in 1975 and brought it with her on their trip west. Had Scott won the title. Donna would have been ready for the celebration. The 1972 AMA Grand National Championship season produced a bumper crop of rookies who went on to bigger and better things. Kenny Roberts, Mike Kidd and Gary Scott were ~II rookies that year with Scott taking Rookie of the Year honors. Roberts leads the honor roll with two titles (1973-74), 29 National victories and three 500cc World Championship GP Road Racing titles (1978-80). Scott has collected one National Championship (1975) and 18 National wins. while Kidd, the new champ. has won 12 Nationals in his career. However. with Randy Mamola and Graeme Crosby making up the works team at present. it looks like there may not be a spot for a third rider even is he is the World Championl The Motorcycle Safety Foundation has released figures showing a six percent. increase in U.S. motorcyde registrations in 1980 over 1979. Registrations rose from 5.339,358 in 1979 to 5.681,479 in 1980. During the same time period, motorcycle accidents decreased by half a percent. There were 177 ,160 accidents in 1980 compared with 177.984 in 1979. Fatalities rose by 5.1 percent in 1980 from 4,850 in 1979 to 5,097 in 1980. Again in 1980 the ratio of both acci· dents and fatalities [0 the number of registrations was down. Accidents per 10,000 registrations decreased from ·333.3 per 10,000 motorcycles in 1979 to 311.8 accidents per 10,000 motorcycles in 1980. And, there ~ere 8.97 fatalities per 10,000 motorcycles in 1980 compl1red with 9_08 fatalities per 10,000 motorcycles in 1979.
