Merlyn Plumlee, a four-year Aspen veteran, teamed up with rookie road racer Brian Anderson to win the Aspen race this year. Plumlee finished founh in 1978, second by 20 seconds in 1979, DNFin 1980. Anderson had never raced on the pavement until June 21, 1981 at Aspen. Brian entered six sprint races that day. He ended up with five fint places and one second place. The two rode a flawless race with the exception of having to change a broken shock around the fifth hour. That pit stop cut their margin to only one lap. The fint three teatns were all on Yamaha ITSOOs. Some early contenders on four cylinden were Brian Fenton/Mike Cameron (Dave's SuzukiSuzuki GSl000), Riclt Orlando/Bruce Gibson (Cycles of Boulder-Kawasaki KZ65O), Dan Walker/Mike Mangham/ John FIieder (RocIty Ridge LTO, Motorcycle Tune-Suzuki GSlloo), Bob Brownell/Dave Deschermaier (Brownell Dis· ttibuting, Bolder Cycle-Suzuki GS75O). A couple of fast thumpen that encountered troubles were the Norm Meyer/Bob Waldo Yamaha SR500 and the GeoffCesmat/Don Lorenzen YarnahaSR500. Three-time Aspen Endurance winner Dr. Tom Marquardt rode with Mike Farmer this year to take second place. Mark Smith and Roger Humphrey slipped into third when the Rough Stock Racing Kawasaki KZl000 of Dr. Dave Keiffer and ~ay Farrow developed a lack of brakes. Fifth place was taken by Ed Fleming and Alvie Gray on a stone stocIt GSlooo. Mike Davidson and Gary Giassnapp followed on a 465 Yamaha. Yes, Virginia, your basic motoc:rouer with a dual diIc front end, shorter monoahocIt and a four-gallon Malcolm Smith gas tank. Stock frame. stoclt engine, even stoclt ban. Mike and Gary were in contention for the win when Gary was forced down and they spent 20 minutes in the pitl replacing the master cylinder.. Out of the lint six teams, only two riders (Dr. Tom and Dr. Dave) are not ex-din racen., The other 10 riders (Merlyn, Brian, Mike, Mark, Roger, Ray, Ed, Alvie, Mike, and Gary) are ex-din track whacltOl. Also of interest, the six fastest qualifiers started and finished in the same order. This is definitely turning into a six-hour sprint race. The fust two teams were sponsored by Motor City Yamaha in Colorado Springs. Merlyn and Brian expressed their appreciation to Motor City when they picked up their five-fpot trophy. Cooper abo dropped one point but 100t out on the tie·breaker. Wayne Beindorf finished a respectable third in AA competition after dropping two pointl.
