Dan Conway moved to the head of the
class. Conway continued in fine form
for the round one victory as Austin's
Ricky Blackwell (Yam) piloted his Bill
Kasson's YZ to second after battling
with "The Boner" Davy Jones (Suz) ,
Kirk Dillon (Yam) and WRW's "Too
Tough" Tim Butler (Yam).
Final race of the day got off to a
rapid start as "Too Tough" wired the
holeshot ahead of California's Juan
"The One" Benavidez (C-A). Before
the end of lap one, Benavidez was pick·/
ing himself up as he and Butler collided
when exiting a turn. Conway was next
to apply pressure to Butler, who
dropped to second as Conway began to
explode.
"Dynamite" Dan, riding the support
red rocket, looked like a shoe·in in
round two; however, Benavidez had
his own ideas. Conway held command
until Juan "The One" blitzed by on lap
18. On a track that began looking like
a war zone, Conway began to fade as
Blackwell got his second wind. Benavidez moved to the winner's circle in
round two as Blackwell took the
overall with a pair of threes for second
ahead of Duncanville's Kirk Dillon,
who piloted his Carter's Yamaha to
fourth in round two with Butler in
fifth. Conway went down with less
than two laps to go and was unable to
get restarted.

Husqvarna·mounted 'Kris Morgan
completely dominated the Utah
Buzzards' fall desert
opener!
The Buzzards finally ran out of
race
luck for this one, though. Before, they
always received rain or snow. Not so
this time; they received dust, dust and
more dust. And a delay in the start of
the race because a number of unexpected riden showed up late.
At the smoke bomb we; saw Morgan
(450 Hus), Allen Gerber (495 KTM),
Kevin Bouge (250 )'am) and then a
large wall of dust cut.ting our, vision to
zero. From there the courie went
through several deep washes.. down a
fast fire road, down a nasty sand wash
and out acrOllS the famous Bonneville
Salt Flats where the big bores were
reaching 100 mph.
At check one, Morgan had a slim
lead as Gerber's KTM was out·horsepowering the big-bore Husky. Over 50
rider Don Fuller (465 Yam) had pulled
through the dust, and Kevin Jones
(250 Suz) moved up to' pass Bouge.
Probably the one and only small bore
to make it that far was Brian Allred
(125 Suz); all other
bores died
from too much high speed running.
Loop two saw Fuller fall from the
race with no oil in his gearbox. Scott
Gerber (495 KTM) pulled out unable
to see, and several othen laid along
the trail awaiting. help, for they hit
washes or drainage ditches along the
flat.

Morgan pulled in at the finish with a
little over 12 minutes on second
