HUSOVARNA MAJCO ..... By Jerry R. Newray LIVERMORE, CA, SEPT. 15 It was Livermore Valley Stadium hosting another large crowd of din hungry dust thirsty motocross racers today with some vast improvemenu and enlarged track areas. Over 150 riden came out to test their skills and most of all, their nerve. In 250cc Novice, probably the most competitive of all the different classes, it was Doug Kirkorian capturing top honon with a fint and second. The first mota was a super stan for all l!2 staners with Kevin Green, Kirkorian and Rick Vennace jumpiDg in front and serving notice that they would be the riders to beat in this moto. With a whole new series of amall hills and one super 10Dg and fast straightaway, it was a real battle of honcpower and brute strength with Green maintaining his narrow lead. Vennace Ihowed some great ridiDg skills as he slipped under the Yamaha of Kirltorian and then proceeded to hunt down Green. On the last lap, it was Vennace and Kirkorian within just a few yards of Green and with just one tum left, Kirkorian tried one last move to take both riders for the lead but could only manage to get ~ the second place Vennace to finish up in the second position. The second moto took iu toll on some of the fint moto favorites as Green dropped out with a broken valve spriDg, and that's all KirItorian Deeded to blaze the very fast Livermore course. Behind his Yamaha was a gi'oup of riders including one of the hottest riders in the 2SOcc Novice c1aII in the Bay area, David Minjares. Minjares put on quite a show himself as he got held up in the first tum by several of the slower riders and then burst all the way through the pack to fmd himself in second position. With Minjares pressing Kirltorian, it was a race to the finish as both riders found themselves looking at each other on the fina1lap. When the checkered flag fell, it was Kirkorian there fint and then Minjares followed by Ron Bradley. The overall title went to Kirkorian riding a Yamaha, with Minjares on his Suzuki taking the second-place trophy home and Ron Bradley gathering enough poinu to take home the third·place trophy. In the 125cc Novice class, it was Chris Plain with the overall win as he showed the other riders he was the top 125cc rider for the day. In the fint moto, it was Plain teariDg out of the gate and into the fint tum ahead of the pack to asume the early lead with Greg Blair, Don Hall and Steve Nauman finding their respective spou behind him. With Plain smoking through the turns and shooting down the long straight, it was clear in everybody's mind that he could not be beal so the only real race was for second and third place. On the founh lap, it was Hall laking second with a good move on Blair and Nauman with Ron Clay coming from the back of the pack to show some of the front-runners that he was in the race, too. When the flag fell, it was Plain with a big lead followed by Blair malting a good move to take second and Hall squeezing in for third. The next moto saw Plain definitely down on horsepower due to a bad spark plug. He left the gate very slowly with Nauman taItiDg the lead. Plain made up a little ground each lap, but it wasn't until the fifth lap that he was right back up to the front of the pack with Nauman in his sighu. The only problem was that the laps ran out with Nauman taItiDg the WIn followed by Plain and Hall. The overall went to Plain on his Yamaha followed by Nauman on his Honda and Hall on his Yamaha. Today, over 150 riders tested their skills on the newly deIiped course with the winnen in the Expert classes being Kimo Casey in the 2501 and John Noumou in the USa. In the 2SOcc Expert c1aII, the first moto got staned off in great fashion as Ca8ey aboard his Yamaha took off with a huge holeshot followed by the Yamaha of Gary Johnson and then by a small group of tIie other riden. Casey con· tinued to show his expert fonn and style as he used all his strength to handle the big bumps on the tough Livermore course. When the checItered flag came out, Casey took the win followed by Johnson 15 seconds behind. An Rousch took the third spot. The second moto staned off almost like the fint except Casey did not take a big lead with his big holeshot; this time it was Johnson sticking to his back wheel like "honey on a piece of toast. On the fifth lap, Johnson put a move on Casey that made the Livermore crowd stand on their feet as Johnson slid underneath Casey and shot out of turn six and into the lead for the fint time of the day. This only seemed to get Casey upset and on the final lap, he used sheer strength to overpower Johnson as he nailed Johnson with almost the same move that put JobnIon into fint. Casey then put a little distance on him and took the c:becItered flag for the second time for the overall title followed by Johnson and ROU8ch. Results 250 EX: I.· KImo ~ IYII'III; 2. Eric Eaton stubbonly refused to let Burgett by for the Open win. On a beautiful day and a typically well prepared Broeamle track, aD c1asIes had a chance to go for it. The 50-40 class was the bi~ winner in the pure fun category. Bill Cook (Mai) came back to Washougal after an over-long absence to go to the wire both motOl. But not before John English (KTM) tested his mettle. English passed Cook on- two separate occuions only to 10lle it back again to an auertive Cook_ Richard Kelly (Suz) let his presence be known to all. A determined rider is Mr. Kelly. Only a miscue through the whoops caused him to mill a solid
