"If I can get it started, you've got to ride it," said Harden. Start it he did and Statlander remoutned and rode to a third Open finish. . Meanwhile Kevin Welch was far oUt in front and putting time on the entire pack. At the finish line he was over seven minutes ahead of Pasqualotto. Welch continues winning at MRAN H&H By Wayne Gales SLOAN, NV, SEPT. 20 Team Vegas Cycle scored a 1-2 sweep in the sixth annual Southern Nevada Desert Racers Hare and Hound, as Kevin Welch took 20 overaII honors over Anthony Pasqualotto in a Maico-mounted field day. The Motorcycle Racing Association of Nevada-sanctioned race, which was held near Sloan, about 20 miles south of Las Vegas, consisted of four-28 mile loops of soft, silty Nevada desert which quickly degenerated into one big, rutted out whoop-de-doo. The chewed up course, combined with a long hot summer with little racing, made for tired bodies. After the riders' meeting, where chances were sold for a Honda ATC which was being raffled off to help support the 1981 ISDE, the big bikes roared off the line. Anthony Pasqualotto got one of his patented holeshots, followed by Welch. Anthony led for the entire first lap, only to seize while going through the the overall win at the Guny Whomper Enduro, 10sing 64 seconds on his 250 Husky. Rick Daniel pushed his Rincon Kawasaki 250 to second overall with the only other zero at 85 seconds dropped. 1981 200cc point leader Kurt Butler had the best of the "one pointers," losing a minute and 65 seconds on his PE175. The other riders losing only one point and change on the lOO-mile course were Jim Webb, sandbagging the 125cc B class, followed by Doug Douglas, Can-Am sponsored Craig Lair riding in' the 250cc AA class. Three seconds behind Craig was berm busting Bill Fulmer, Jr. on an old but sano ITI75 in the 200cc AA class. At 7;01 am, the first of over 400 riders headed out across Lucerne Valley's famous Gully Whompers on the first of three loops, following many familiar and not so familiar trails, the ~ VIIIIey - Redllllowbllu- course led south toward Soggy Dry Lake, across Bessemer Mine Road and through the twisty sand canyons before heading back to the pits at Anderson Dry Lake. Todd Jobnson (Mini B) smoked the one loopers, grudgingly giving up a paltry five seconds. Robert Wramosky lost 17 seconds to take the Mini A class ahead of Chaparral Larry Stefan's RMSO. Fust B Woman was Bar Bender Lori Emdundson on her 250 Maico. . The second loop took the surviving riders out across open desert before throwing the "enduro stuff" at them. A couple of short sections tested the riders before the true "special test" section over by Finger Rock. Very few AA, A and B rider made the check on time at the end of the special test. Joe Wilson dropped a point and 82 seconds to take the two loop overall honors over James Bortree just six seconds behind at 1.88 on his Open c1aaser. Ken Willaham came in third C, first 250cc C, losing two points. The A Women get to find out what the second loop is like at the three loop events. First A Woman turned out to be Bev Donat with a respectable 10 points. A and B riders took off on the third loop looking for action, and got it. The trail took them through some really tight 18 mph stuff. Only one problem though - the route sheet said 24 mph. A timely reset let everyone get back on time before heading in. A sneaky check a little more than three miles from the finish cooled off some of the antsy hot shoes before it was Miller time. The rest of the top 10 had Dirly BiIters' Paul Clipper (20Occ B) to by keep Tom Webb in sight foIl Whee1smith Maico Senior pilot Harry Keast flying his FAA illegal 490. Mark Cook stroked his 250cc Maico two seconds faster than Rick Bieniar could strokes his floating RM250. Combining excellent course design an4 mileage with adequate marking and timely resets, CRC again came up with a good run. The next enduro IS the Iron Horse three looper Oct.
