Rick Burgett !"8Iand Darrell Shultz battle for third In the second moto. Shultz took It for second overeD while Burgett _nt 8-4 for third.
different look at this," said Glover as
he showed us a severely scored piston
and cylinder. "The bike stopped and
when I was playing with the choke
lever someone knocked me down. I've
been hearing all kinds of stuff about
what happened, so here's the truth."
Bell took his Dave Osterman tuned
air-cooled works Yamaha to the lead
off the line in moto two. Maico's
Carlos Serrano locked into second with
Yamaha's Scott Burnworth, Burgett
and LaPorte in pursuit. Barnett was
taken off his line in the first lap's
second tum and knocked to the
ground, ridden over, and left with
bars bent so badly his bike was almost
unrideable. Hansen had a good line
but was pushed high and lost ground.
Barnett rode one lap, then despondently pulled into the mechanics' area
where he had his bars straightened
while Suzuki's team manager Larry
Griffis offered encouragement. Just
before Bell came around to Lap Barnett,
Mark blasted off and rode with a fury
which carried him to a 15th place finish.
Bell was putting in a clean ride and
grabbed an eight second lead by midrace. Glover took second from Burgett
after a hefty dice, and Wise and Burnworth followed with cushions between
them. Bentley, at mid-pack, slid out
and Hannah charged past for II tho He _
again had had a poor start.
Barneu crashed, got up, and went
neD faster. He had an ALabama/Illinois
cheering section on hand who ~~
in with the rest of the crowd and c
Mark on.
Glover took the lead at mid-point in
the 40 minute plus two laps moto with
Bell holding close. Burgett was pressured by Wise but Wise faded,
clearing his goggles to regain vision.
. Glover and Bell remained fairly tight
for the rest of the race with Broc winning. Shultz picked up his pace ~nd
moved into third in the late stages willi
Burgett holding Wise off for fourth.
Burnworth took sixth ahead of Yamaha
Pro Support's Rick Johnson. Hannah
put a flying pass on Honda supported
Ron Turner, but Turner regained
eighth by the finish. Hannah was
ninth, and Moto-X Fox's David Bailey .
rode to 10th on his production '82
Kawasaki.
"The second moto I knew I had
over~ll," said Bell, "and when Broc
got by I knew I didn't have to re-pass
him. That took some of the pressure
off. I don't know what it is, all of a
sudden I feel really good on a bike
again. I was getting sick of riding and
traveling, and once I admitted that to
myself and started to work with the
problem things went better."
"I was going to cut over across the
start and went into some deep sand.
My front end stuck and I looped it,"
said Barnett. "The next thing I knew
Darrell was flying over me and then he
bailed. Then I flew really high off the
tunnel jump and the wind carried me
off course. I landed in some mud and
crashed hard. I think I might have
broken my collarbone again - I can't
move my arm over my head."
"LaPorte fell in front of me and I
hit him. I flattened my front tire and
tweaked the front end," said a
dejected Hansen.

For the second week in a row "The
Magoo," Danny Chandler, grabbed
overall with a 4-1 score on a LOP
Honda 480R. "I don't know, I just
never had the breaks before," said
Chandler. "I've been smoothing out
some, and I'm getting married next
month (to girl friend Tracy) and that'll
really calm me down. My mechanic
Eric Simison is the ley, he has the bike
right and gives me good signals during
the race.

Moto one saw Husky's Gary Pustelak
left on the ground as the pack sped
away. Honda supported Ron Sun, Keystone's Jeff Hicks and Yamaha Pro Support nder Arlo Englund shared the
holeshot.
Englund took over on lap one with a
commanding style of riding followed
by Sun and Hicks. A few seconds back
Honda supported Jim Ellis, Chandler
and Husky's Billy Grossi were arguing
over fourth.
Hicks moved to second for a few
laps, then took the lead and once
again displayed his new, fast approach
to racing. Englund was alone in second
with Sun and Chandler running !l-4.
GrOlIIIi, Honda supported Larry Wosick
and Ellis were next. Ellis lost his line
and held it WFO through the slop to
retain seventh.
Hicks and Chandler had problems
in the low section of the course, Hicks
fading to second and Chandler to
sixth. Englund had problems with
lapped riders and Hicks once again
closed the gap to feet, but Englund
pulled away for an eventual win.
Hicks was second with Sun moving
to third. Chandler moved into fourth
with Wesick over Ellis for fifth. KTM/
Keystone rider Andy Stacy moved to
seventh and Maico's Denny Swartz
tucked in ahead of Yamalia rider Troy
Bradshaw for eighth.
Cliandler and GrOlIIIi clicked together
on the final lap and Grossi DNF,
heading to the pits with a very swollen
right hand. "I came off a jump and
Chandler landed on me. I had just
moved to third. I don't know if anything's broken or not," said Grossi
while nursing his hand with ice.
Magoo headed the pack from start
to finish in moto two. Within two laps
the field spread out' with Chandler
putting a gap on Wosick, Sun, Englund,
Ellis, Honda:~ Rich Coon and Hicks.
Second could have belonged to
Wosid, Englund, Ellis, Coon or Hicks
for most of the race as the group ran
close together. In the end it was Chandler with a victory fISt in the air followed
by Wosick, Coon, Ellis, Englund and
Hicks. Stacy carded another seventh,
and took honors for one of the highest
flyers off the dropaway jum~. Eighth
went to Bradshaw, who put m a hard
ride and diced with Stacy for most of
the molO. Honda supported Jo Jo Keller
overcame some problems to wrap up
ninth with Swartz lOth.
