AMA Trans-USA MX SerIes: Roundfwo Bellon ,form at RedBud By Tom Muller BUCHANAN, MI;SEPT. 27 It was Team Yamaha's Mike "Too Tall" Bell's day when Trans-USA racing went off at Gene Ritchie's Red Bud Track 'N Trail. The winner's circle has been-evading Mike this season, but this time he used a 2-2 score to postthe top ride of tlie day. • . Second overall dropped mto the hands of Suzuki's Darrell 8 Sbultz. "Shu" alia UIed consistent rides (5-5) to claim his position. Yamaha', Rick BllJllett was third Oftra1l, returning to the riding style that carried him to the 500cc National Championship in 1978. _ Yamaha', Broc Glover and Suzuki', Mark Barnett were tied for the points lead going into Red Bud. Glover had a poor day and Barnett had a diamal one. A seizure relegated Broc to 16th in mota one, which he coupled with a win in mota two for fourth overall. Bamrtt suffered a broken rear brake backing plate and rocIe to fifth in moto one, then w.. run over at the start of an evmtual 15th that time out and t~ .eighth overall. but crashed heavily In the procell and re-injured the coDarbone he broke in August. Honda', Donnie Hansen looked like the fast guy of the day with a win in moto one, but a cruh in moto two left Donnie out of a top placing. The RaDman hang spomored event drew a -reported 9,000 spectaton, who got to see a ,how in which the points shuflled among top riden. Glover holds the lead, but only by one point over BeD, 77 to 76. Barnett dropped to third in the standings with 71, followed by Bob Hannah with 61 and Shultz one point behind at 60. Factory teams were settIina into the programs, working with and refining the machines they brought to Midmoto two. Barnett finished Ohio Jut week. The exception was Team Honda', Danny LaPorte and Johnny O'Mara. who receMd the latrst water·coolen from Japan. '"This one is much simpler," said Chris Haines, LaPorte', tuner. "It only has one (water) pump, while Hansen', bike has two. We tested most of Jut week." Heavy rain in the Lake Michigan area through Saturday night left the coune wet with standing water in places, but sunshine and warm temperatures Sunday morning, combined with the practice session; left the coune damp but rideable by race time. Glover and Bamrtt went out late in practice and played a short mind game over choice of lines, with aU top riden trying to gain a slight edge in track knowledge as comen and straights set up. 'There', a couple of new lticken and the jumps have been built up some," said Barnett. Red Bud is a fairly fast course which starts on a high section and after a few tums pitches Men off a dropaway into a low secrioIl of switch· backs before returning to higher ground and a 180-degree banked right bander. A section of ~ turtII and jumps completes the COIlJ'Ie. 2IOcc Yamaha', Bob Hannah started out a mediocre day when he tang1ed with Suzuki rider Gary Semia throuxh turn one. Semia kept it on two wheeIa while Hannah shook"his head in disgust as he picked his bike up and got rolling in last. Hansen, Barnett, Suzuki', Denny Bentley and Bell were jockeying U'ClJIDd out front, fighting for the lead. By the end of lap one, Barnett was into his UIWlI act - pulling a IarRe lead and pegging the throttle whenever and wherever po8ible. It looked like the umaI race until lap four when Hansen started to ree1 Bar· nett in. The nat time around rear brake parts were dangling off Marlt', bike, and his ~ __ slowed through the comen. BeD finany found a route past Bentley after a dice -.ion. A lap later Hansen was showina the way with Barnett, Bell, Bentley, Glover and Shultz in line behind. BeD took advantage of Barnett', misfortune and slid by, but Mark doubled his effort and returned the favor. He couldn't hold, however, and BeD took second back. It was Hansen leading BeD, Bar· nett and Glover, who were clustered. Hansen lost his line and paddled through the IIlUCky sideIina, but didn't lose position. BeD had claimed a safe second, but third was now a fight berween Barnett and Sbultz. Glover was way back and out of contention. BeD went into overdriYe and tested Hansen in the final laps with Donnie hoIcIinK on by a short distance. Shultz workecf past Barnett for third, with Barnett fourth followed by Bentley, Brusett, LaPorte and Honda', Stege WiBe. Burgett, LaPorte and WiBe bad aU been part of a pack of riders who battled most of the race, with Rick, Danny and Stege pulling free. ""The baclting plate broke, the cut· ing ,just cracked. It only had two races on It, too," said Jeff C1arlt, Bamrtt', turner. "I guess Br.• muat have gone off the track," said Shultz. "I had just palled Barney when Broc ... palling back on. I got sideways ~ the mud and put Broc down apia. I didn't want to, but I _Id have done almost anything to hold him off." "I'm a bit burned out. I tried too hard at the beginning of the year," said Hannah. who pushed from 1ast to an _mal 10th. "I've been running about 10 (mi1eI) a day, but I just don't like to ride. It', ~ better, I thinIt 111 be back real we11 for nat rear... "Before anyone teIla you anything
