Indian Dunes MX co C') .... By Lee Taylor VALENCIA, CA, SEPT.l!O A chance to qualify for the California Racing Club's second Amateur Supercross in San Diego Stadium on Nov. 15 brought a race-hungry horde of riden to Indian Dunes. SEPT. 18 The California Racing Club held one of several qualifiers for its San Diego stadiumcross last Friday night at Corona Raceway along with the usual R.A.C.E. crowd. Although the classes-were integrated with R.A.C.E. and CRC memben, the two clubs were scored separatley. In the CRC l!50cc Intermediate class it was Jack Scott of Yamaha of Pomona who had to hold off the hard challenge of Troy Matthews (Yam) to combine a l!·1 finish taking fint place overall. Pat Schreftler (Hon) grabbed the holeshot in the fmt moto followed by Matthews. Rusty Taflinger (Yam) and Scott. Schreffler managed to hold on to the lead for half the race when both Matthews and Scott slipped by the Honda rider. Scott put the pressure on Matthews for the rest of the race but couldn't quite get around. Schreffler held on to finish third while Rick Vanderham (Yam) settled for founh. At the end of the fIrst lap of the second moto, Matthews had the lead chased by Scott and Schreffler. This time, Scott wasted no time in getting around Matthews for the lead, but Matthews didn't give up and kept the prasure on Scott. Scott held on for the win followed by Matthews, Schreffler and Vanderham. Once a~, Malcolm Smith Yamaha nder Eric MacCracken dominated the l!5Occ Pro class by leading every lap of both motos to capture a perfect win. Second place went to the Honda rider Scott Wilkinson who finished up the night with a l!-5 score. Steve Denny (Yam) won the CRC l!5Occ Expert class with a flawless I-I placing beating out Steven Schilly (Yam). Results MN BEG: 1. Erik S.; 2. e;.,. _lVomI; 3. John -.aolVomI. MINT BEG: 1. II By Don Akers Jon' Alexander and Jim Holley were among the evening's big winners as the California Racing Club hosted a Friday night motocross under the lights at Indian Dunes. Upsets and wheel-to-wheel racing were the order of the day at the Las Vegas Speedrome today. Bodie Kay (RD400) started the The ll!5cc Intermediates ran one of the fastest and tightest races of the night with a super duel for the lead shaping up in the first moto between Alexander and Bruce Hirdshimn for command. With Alexander leading, these two attacked every inch of the track with less than two and one-half seconds separating them. A battIe for third was taking shape between Jim Hartman, Rob Mansfield and Jim Boyd that left little if any breathing space between them. When the moto drew to a close. Alexander held command. with Hirdshimn and Hanman holding onto second and third. respectively. The second round of madness saw Andy Nelinger, who ONF the first time out, in the lead and fighting ofT Hanman and Alexander. When the final checkered flag waved them home, Alexander took top honors for the night, Hartman picked up second place gold and third overa11 went to Mark Chikasawa for a 6-5 ride. The l!50cc Pro contest found Yamaha suppon racer Holley out in front for both motOl. The first time out of the gate, Holley had his hands full with Jeff Jones and Rob Peeples, running close behind. From third on back the action was hot and heavy with founh place Brian Chereshkoff fighting to hold Pat Dolan to fifth. When the mota wound to a dOlle, Holley skimmed across the line. followed byJones, and Peeples. When the machines blasted off the line for their second attack, Holley once more took control, and this time he had Peeples to contend with. Nick Athans, who ONF his first time around. up close in third and smoking! Jones in founh, was fighting and doing everything he could to hold back the rest of the field. In tbe end Holley claimed winner's share of the gold. Peeples scooped up second place loot and third place money went home in Jones' wallet. Results 10 BEG: 1. Guy Ar-.o lhon); 2. Jell ~ ae-t; 3. Kay got a strong stan and led the race from wire to wire. VanNatta, on his TPIIAustin-sponilOied Honda. was hot on his tail until a wild ride into the din on the third lap spit him off and reduced the Honda to a pile of component parts and VanNatta to a hobbling spectator. The next race of the day was the 600cc Box Stock clua, and it, too, featured an upset. "Crazy Ed" Malkiewicz on his Wildlife Performance KZ550 got. the holeshot and didn't waste any time looking back to see who was next! He ww it would be his old nemesis, Jadt Baker. Baker, on the Nevada, Yamaha/TPI-sponsored 550 Seca was right there just waiting for an opening. The opening came. and Balter palled Malkiewicz. then Malkie· wicz repassed Baker, etc•• etc. It had all the earmarks of a c1asIic duel until Baker, coming out of tum six in the lead. hooked a loose tire with his gearshift leger. That little exerciIe had a number of repercusaionsl F'mt off, it almost made Baker kick himself in the back of his own bead; secondly, it bent his gearshift leger back underneath his peg; and lastly. it launched a tire riaf", at Malkiewicz who . . directly ~ Bakerl Malkiewicz IIUCCCSSfuJIy dodged the tire. and he Nul to be thinking ''This is a hell of a way to win a raceJ" as he watched Baker retire. The 600cc Production race winDer was Henry Teaa on a brand new GPz550. Henry has been noticeable by his absence on the track for 1IOIJICtime, but the long layoff didn't seem to affect his riding ability or his ability to set up a bike. He took his box stock GPz off the showroom floor just three weeks ago and. in that shon time, turned it into a com~tive production class racer. His malden voyage on it was a graphic lesaon on how to go fast without getting squirrelyl He hung back just behind the leader until the final few laps, and then zapped him with a clean pass and cruised in for the win. Coming up next was the Open Production class. and it had Slim Stephena.
