lIern Nevada· Southern Calil, whole regular ride is the Kawasaki West/TPI sponsored KZlOOO, pitted againlt Lance Owem. Unfortunately, Stephens, who had bent a valve in practice, was frantically scoring the piu looking for a ridel Taking pity on him, Rudy Romero offered him his 550 Sea. Stephem, operating on the theory that any ride is better than no ride at all, gratefully accepted. When the flag dropped, Owem on his KZlOOO proved that old sayin$"' ''There ain't no substitute for cubiC inchesl" He took the lead with a vengeance, but Stephens wasn't giving anything away eitherl They both left the rest of the riders behind them and were seriowly doing some racing. The fact that we have a tight course helped Stephens somewhat, but when you're racing agaimt someone as good as Lance Owens, you jwt can't afford to . give away horsepower. Owens took the checker with St~phens running second. Last race of the day was the Open Superstreet class. Lance Owem won this one, too, but not without a tussle from Dave Smith on his GPzlIOO. Lance took the quick way out of the gate, but Smith was close behind. They stayed this way till lap seven when Smith bobbled slightly and made a fast shot off the apron leading into tum one. Using skills accumulated motocroesing, Smith managed to steer his way through the assortment of tires laying there and re-entered the track, but with a five-and-a-half-second deficit that he couldn't quite make up. As always, the SNRR support people kept things moving smoothly, and a vote of thanks is due to Scott ChayterRace Director and Starter, Casey Hermanson-Head Referee, Tedd BrandesGridder and Tech Inspector, Danny Colgain-Tech Inspector, Connie Stephens-Registration, and Head Scorer Kathy Brandes. The next race on the schedule will be on Oct. II, and with the promise of racers coming in from the Phoenix, AZ association, should be an exciting one.
