Newray FREMONT, CA, AUG. ll6 Baylands night motocross has become a regular event to attend if you live in the Fremont area. Along with spectators comes a racer named Shawn McConn and his ll50 Yamaha. McConn has totally wiped out all of his competition in the ll50cc Pro category and has now accumulated a herd of fans that come oU.t just to watch the McConn show. This week was no exception as McConn may have put in his best ride of the year, and all of the fans sure got their money's worth. In the first moto it was McConn doing his usual shot into the first turn way ahead of the rest of the field. With McConn way ahead, the other. great names that followed him consisted of Beeman, Kimo Casey, Jerry Brandt and past winner Jeff Jacobson, all trying in vain to catch the hot McConn. Disaster struck the Yamaha of McConn as he Itit a small hole which e took him and his bike to the ground and allowed every single rider to pass. McConn finally got his bike restarted and proceeded to put on one of the most daring rilies every seen at Baylands. Jacobson took his Maico to the front of the pack followed by Jerry Brandt and Don Clark, but the real race was being run from the back of the pack as McConn started shooting past a few riders each lap in a great attempt to catch the lead riders. With just two laps left, McConn found the fourth position and started a ride that had the fans on their feet as he took the lead in the final, turn taking the checkered flag and moving his streak of consecutive wins to seven. Following McConn was Brandt on his Yamaha with Casey taking third. The second moto started out like everybody was really going to put the screws to McConn's win streak. Bruce Manzoni took the lead followed by Jacobson, Brian Otto and then by McConn. With several lead changes it was but four laps before McConn shot by the front·runners and went on to take the checkered flag for his eighth moto win in a row and his fourth overall, also. Taking second was Manzoni and third was Jacobson. In the 1115 Pros it was a different story as it wasn't anyone rider sweeping both motos but a few different riders adding enough points together in order to take the place money home. The first moto started off with all the riders bunched up in the first tum; Michael Whalen was the first rider to take the highbanked second tum followed by Rick Ryan, Allen Silhanek and Michael Preston. Whalen was going into the final lap but was being tailed ever so close by Ryan and Silhanek and when the flag fell it was Whalen with Ryan holding onto second and Silhanek taking it wheel to wheel with Preston for third. The second moto saw a past winner who had problems with his Yamaha come up to take the lead on the opening lap to really show some folks that he really knows how to use a bike to his advantage. Paul Duchscher kept the Yamaha running strong with the throttle WFO and managed to keep it barely ahead of strong runner Matt Elkins and Willie Miller. The overall went to Whalen followed by Miller on a Suzuki. Mustering enough points for third was Ryan on a Yamaha. • .-c 00 0') .-c ~ 0 at') $-0 GJ ,.0 .5 ., ~ GJ en (Hun); 3.
