AU the races were clOllely fought, dbow-to-elbow contests. Especially 10 in the SOOcc main where Rodd "Bones" Lighthouse and Leonard "Horney" Hornbarger traded the lead with neither able to squeeze out more than half a bikelen«th advarJtage. Hombarger had the edge at the checltered where it counts. The Hom~/Liabthouse rivalry continued into tlie ~aT crowd pleaser, a wheelie contest, where the two bested the other wheelie contestants and then alternated beating each other's distances by mere feet until Lighthouse ran into the fence during a maximum effort try and put himself out of action. Hornbarger won $70 for his 20-lap main event victory and $100 for his half-a·lap of whee.lie. That should tell you lOmething about where to ~pply yourself if you want to make a living riding motorcycles. Another crowd pleaser was an intermission show of trials maneuven put on by local Kawasalti dealer Graig Prest. TIIis was the first alI-motorcyeIe pr0gram on the Humboldt County Fairgrounds' new quarter-mile dirt track. The track record, held by a stock car, had been 19.4 seconds. 01' W~tched hisself clocked a couple bikes in the 16.95 and an unofficial 15.5 was reported. So, the crowd got their money's worth after all. The Flying W's hope to make motorcycle short track racing a permanent part of the Winnemucca Rodeo. Watch for it on Labor Day Weekend '82. Dana W uham put in a good run by outflying Steve A~ in the double jumps and outgallling Dave Wood in the sweeping tum. Waxham's efforts gave him a IOlid second ahead of Wood. A~na and Dan Turner. Ed Minton grabbed the holeshot in the second moto, five places ahead of Chandler. All eyes were on Magoo as an anxious crowd looked for lOme fast action in the six and a half laps to go. On the second lap, Chandler caught Wood in the sweeping tum, bumped past A~ in the hairpins, and outflew rider 1105 (not signed up) over the double jumps. On the third lap, he outgassed Rick Cervantes in the back straight and began working on the leader. Minton. Minton held Chandler off through half a lap befo~ the speed got to him. and he lost it in turn one. Chandler led five riden by befo~ Minton could get remounted. The finish was Chandler, 1105, Cervantes, WaxhamandA~. The 2SOcc Pro class staned just like the 1251. Chandler missed the holeshot but made it past the leader, Dave Wood, before the end of the fint lap. From the lap two to the checkers, it was Chandler, Wood, Jimmy Robert· son, Randy Chapman and Tom McKinney. In the second moto, McKinney took the holeshot followed by RobertlOn and Chandler. Magoo caught RobertlOn on the second lap and began working on McKinney. Tom wasn't to be pasaed easily tbough.
