CARLSBAD, CA, AUG. 24
Gary Semics rode his Suzuki to a
1-1 finish in the 250cc Pro class
at the Continental Moto-sports
Club's Carlsbad MX.
David Gerig got his usual holeshot
with Tim Lunde second, Pete Murray
third and Seroics fourth. Semics quickly took over second and pulled even
with Gerig on the third lap as they
thrashed up the uphill. Semics went in
front at the top, but Gerig repassed
him in the berm at the bottom. Gerig
was able to hold off Semics till the
sixth lap when the bolt on his seat
broke.
Jim Odie had the most impressive
ride of the day after his seventh place
start, moving to third by the seventh
lap. Semics finished 10 seconds ahead
of Gerig. Odie took a strong third after
closing Gerig's 12-second lead down to
two. Lunde was fourth, Norman
Nilsson fifth and Murray sixth.
Gerig got his second holeshot of the
day over Pat Hubbs second and
Semics, who moved into second on the
fint lap. Gerig held a small lead over
Semics till the fifth lap when Semics
took over the lead on the uphill.
Semics increased his lead on each lap
when Gerig fell off the pace, tiring
after three and a half motos, two of
which were in the 500cc Pros, where
he won. Semics went on to finish with
a comfortable lead over Gerig, while
Lunde made his way up from sixth to
overtake Hubbs for third and third
overall. Odie passed Nilsson on the last
lap to take fifth.
Fritz Schlegel added another I-I
win as he took his third overall win in
his last three outings in the U5cc Pros.
Schlegel's closest competitor was Rick
Maki, who got the holeshot in the fint
moto. Schlegel followed Maki until the
third lap where he passed him for the
lead. Dave Hamada held third over
Ross Maeda till the fifth lap when
Maeda went past. Maeda caught Maki
and took over second for a lap till
Maki repassed Maeda and opened a
large lead. Schlegel finished with a 22second lead over Maki and 50 over
Maeda in third.
Ray Tetherton started practicing his
start about an hour before the last
moto. The leaden lined up at the gate
ready to go. Stu Peters pulled the lever
and they were off with Tetherton out
in front, Maki second and Schlegel
third. Tetherton's practice paid off to
get the holeshot, but that was all, as
Maki and Schlegel both passed
Tetherton on the fint lap. Maeda
chased Tetherton around for the fint
two laps till Maeda took over on the
uphil. Tetberton held onto fourth till
the 10th lap when Hamada passed on
the back side. Schlegel won tbe second
moto by 40 seconds over Maki with
Maeda third. The overall order was
the same.
