HarrIs domlnafes Soufhways Race Park By Marueen Daspit Daniels PICAYUNE, MS, AUG. 22 Yamaha rider Steve Harris, representing Mississippi Cycles of Jackson, MS, placed first overall in the main event of the 130-220 class Saturday night. Harris lived up to his reputation, of being unable to beat in the Mississippi area, as he raced at the Southways flat track for the first rime. Harris also took first place money, along with a trophy, on his 175 in the Open class. Harris started off the gate like a bullet, grabbing the holeshot all three heats of the 130-220 "A" class. Harris met the checkered first with an outstanding lead in all heats. Honda rider john Robertson, Sonny Meyers of Doc Meyers & Son Yamaha in New Orleans, Louisiana, and Mike McCool, also on a Yamaha, competed heavily, changing places each heat. Chris jones on a Yamaha had mechanical problems and could not qualify for the main. In the 130-220 "B" class, Darron Kennedy and Jessie Mills battled throughout the three heau. Charles D. Penny riding a Yamaha rpade some slick moves, hanging in there. giving him a second overall. Kennedy qualified for the main with a third overall. Nolan Tollett of The Big Mohof£ Yamaha, Metairie, Louisiana, clilimed the holeshot in the second moto. Tolfett finished founh overall, qualifying him for the main also. joey Miciello had problems with his machine, plac.ing him out of competition for the final race. - Excitement grew as eight riders lined the gate for the main event. Once again, Harris claimed the holeshot, followed by Robertson. Robertson was passed in the third lap by Meyers. In the fourth lap, McCool ovenook two riders, Mills, then Roberuon. Positions stayed the same until the white flag lap. Then Mills had problems and Penny took his place in third. Robertson pressured McCool and in the last lap Robertson blasted by McCool, meeting the checkered third. McCool finished founh followed by Penny. Another exciting race of the night was the 80-130' class. Yamaha riders Gary Hover and Gerald Coopy really diced it out. Hover claimed the holeshot in the first heat, holding the lead the' entire time. Coopy didn't let up, trying every way to pass Hover. Doug Hemphill finished third, while Derek Tollett finished fourth. In the second heat, Coopy pulled the holeshot but Hover took the lead seconds after. Once again Coopy stayed hot on Hover's trail, but Hover held his defense. Hemphill met the <;heckered third, Tollett fourth. In the final heat, Coopy claimed the holeshot again. Hover and Hemphill crashed in the first tum but Hover recovered his 125 within seconds, finishing the first lap in third. In the fourth lap, Hover passed Tollett", meeting the checkered in second. Hover trophies first overall. However Coopy, being his very first race, signed up for the money and won first place, trophying second overall. Southways increases the pot of each class with money entries by $20; that is, in addition to the 100 percent payback of the total amount of fees entered in that class. For the next three races, Yamaha and Southside Cycles of Slidell, Louisiana, will donate one set of trophies to a totally stock 80·130 class. Stock Hondas and Yamahas under 130cc's are invited to enter the Southside Cycles class free. PatIIluma.
