By Chuck Clayton As we go editorially into the what, who, where, when, why and how of ATV land, we anti· Cipate a fun ride. ATV, by our definition, means several things. It stands for All Terrain Vehicles, of course. Thanks to their fat, .flotation tires and light weight power, ATVs can go places that would defeat other modes of transportation. ATV also stands for Alternative Transportation Vehicles, in our dictionary. Definitions are loose, because AT\' is a new phenomenon of the Eighties (SOV). Every so many years a new form of motorized sport takes its place among the good things life offers. ATV News plans to concentrate on the multi-wheel fat tire, thumb throttle sports vehicles and oddities, because tha t is the new territory. We have copyrighted the trademark ATV News to apply to this extra addition to Cycle News that will come out monthly at no extra cost to the readers of CN East and West. There are other magazines covering the !l-wheel and Odyssey field, and there may be more in the future. What makes ATV News different from the rest is the newsiness of the information. ATV News will get the news to you first. While other magazines are still being manufactured' ATV News is being delivered to you. "More fun for the money" is the motto of ATV News. My idea of fun is safely testing my and the machine's limits of durability and control at speeds that tach my heart to the redline. ATVs are different. They're routinely used to humiliating expert motorcycle riders. I am a perennial novice by profession, so I took to ATVs like I do with any new motorized sporting goods - nervously. Craig Vetter, the motorcycle designer, was the first person I called when I was tapped for this job. Craig has three ATC 1105 that he uses for odd jobs around his mouft~.aintop design studio. He jumped at the chance to turn me out on them at nearby Pismo Dunes. After a few hours of trying to master the peculiar handling characteristics of the little thing, running over my feet, falling off, etc. I hurt in muscles I didn't know were there, my pockets are full of sand, and I am stoked over a great new sport that is just getting started. I think a lot of other motor sports enthusiasts will feel just as excited over this new thing once they try it. We hope, through ATV News, to help generate more organized races around the country, to inspire the manufacturers to better efforts, and to stand up to the Druids who wish to ban offroad sports wherever they can. ATVs are starting life with a clean slate. They have opened up terrain where no vehicles have been able to go before, and it is all of our responsibility to keep these areas open. We know from our motorcycle experience what is needed to keep this new sport in good with the general public exhaust muffs, individual responsibility, self control. Often in error, but never in doubt, the editors will try and make ATV News just as good as its parent publicatian iJl. ~.L!ls.~a<:PIIlc:,. ••••••••! .. __ CHASSIS MUGEI ITC KITS ENGINE ....~~~=1 - o Louver-Vented Front Fender $44.95 o Louver·Vented Air Box Cover ~5.95 o Competition Short Course Bars 2-a.95 o Genuine CR Grips 4.95 o Competition Clutch Lever AssV , ....• 19.95 o Folding Shift Lever . .. 22.95 o Aero-Dvnlmic Number Plate . 19.95 o Relr Number Plate 4.95 o Number ptlte Bracket (Frontor Rearl 5.95 o Relr Sprockets 36- to 46-tooth 22.95 o CountersheftSprockets 12-tol6-tooth 9.95 o 520 TsubekiRecingChein-SPECIFY 29.95 o 530 Competition Chein Kits SPECiFy 69.95 o Competition Throttle Cable 7.95 o o Competition Clutch Cable.
