McLain got by Faria for second on lap one with Faria moving back by on the outside for second at the white flag. McLain went to the inside to retake the runner-up spot with Faria surprising everyone with the move of the night as he went to the inside coming out of four on the final lap to take second from a startled McLain. Sims pulled off an upset in race 26 as he waited until the final corner to go by Christian on the inside to record the victory and a trip to the main. Schwartz again had to deal with Lucero in the semi, passing the youngster in turn three on the opening circuit for the lead and the victory. Surprising john Foster Oaw) closed fast on Lucero but ran out of time at the checkered. King. got the gate in the final semi over Ferrell out of four on the opening lap with Sandona continuing on past McConnell for second. Ferrell rode hard into turn one on lap two to get by McConnell and Sandona for second. McConnell encountered the back chute wall and dropped out. Sandona moved up to challenge Ferrell for second with the two southern California riders going at it side by side until Sandona hit the dirt in turn three on lap three. King wasJong gone for the trip to the main with Ferrell advancing to the consy. Schwartz got the pole for the main and took the lead over Bast, who was coming from the number two spot, King and Sims. Bast went to the inside to take the lead in turn one on the opening lap with Schwartz getting by for good in turn two. King and Sims were having a battle for third with King getting by and then challenging Bast for second. It was the teacher and the pupil side by side for the runnerup spot. King took what looked to be the final pass in turn two on the final lap only to have Bast get back by in turn four. King, on the outside, got the drive out of the final corner to take second from Bast by a hair at the line. For the record it was Schwartz for the victory and the eight points over King. Bast and Sims. Results POINTS: 1. Bobby Schwartz 1201; 2. Lance King (191; 3. Mike Beet 118); 4. Mike F.-WD... Sima 1151; 6. Alen C _ n 1121; 7. Dubb Ferrell/Steve Lucero 1101; 9. Schwartz super at Costa Mesa By Kenneth Kellogg COSTA MESA, CA, AUG. 28 The final round of the National Qualifiers went down before a full house at the Orange County Fairgrounds. On hand for this last determining round was Bobby Schwartz who swept to wins in all of his rides here tonight. Mike Bast was back. although he still didn't have the skin graft needed to restore use of his heel. He did have a special boot made. Bast may have been limping in the pits, but that was the only place he hobbled. In his first two heats, Bast took first, and in his third race. he took a second behind Gene Woods. Going into tonight's racing. Lance King was the points leader; second was Mike Bast (who after tonight remained the same). Third was Alan Christian. who dropped down to third; fourth was Bobby Schwartz, who moved into third. At fifth was Mike Faria who moved up one to fourth. Several other positions were changed. For the first seven events, top riders took turns winning their heats. Then, beginning with event number eight strange things started happening as everyone realized this was it, their last chance to make the Nationals. Event eight matched Dave Miller. Dubb Ferrell, Alan Christian and Paul Orlandi. Orlandi, 'an underdog from NorCal, not only won it but passed two of the best riders in American speedway. Ferrell and Christian. On lap one Christian was in first, Ferrell second and Orlandi third. Then like a rocket, Orlandi took to the outside. On the next lap he had passed Ferrell and was moving on Christian. Christian had about a four bikelength lead, but that didn't phase Orlandi. He kept right on going and on the next lap had moved into an equal position with Christian. getting ready to pass. To the enjoyment of the capacity crowd. Orlandi took over the lead and the win while gaining about 7000 fans in the process. Ferrell passed Christian to take second. Going into the semis, Schwartz, Mike Bast and john Sandona all had won all their heats (Sandona surprised everyone with his unbeatable heats). However in his first semi, Sandona finished a disappointing third and did not transfer. though he did make the Nationals. Mike Curoso took first with Gene Woods second. Curoso transferred to the main and Woods to the semi for a chance to pick up more points. In the next semi. Schwartz took the win, leading all the way and defeating a good field comprised of King, Orlandi and reserve Keith Larsen (who made the final qualifying spot). The next semi was probably the best of the night featuring Mike Bast, Christian. Dave Sims and Duane Yarrow. As expected, Bast took the gate. Coming out second by about two inches was Christian followed by Yarrow and Sims. Bast led all the way with Christian challenging at every turn. But Christian had his own troubles, barely holding off Yarrow while Sims finished fourth. The final event of the night was the Skoal-sponsored main event. What a line upl On the pole sat Mike Curoso. next to him in lane two. the incredible Mike Bast. Stuck in the middle was Milte Faria. having an excellent night and definitely a top contender. Way outside in lane four was Bobby Schwartz. Schwanz took the gate and never looked back. Coming out second was Curoso followed by Bast and Faria. They stayed that way until lap three when Faria changed the entire race by passing both Bast and Curoso and began challenging Schwanz but there weren't enough laps left. So the stage is set for the National Championship here on Oct. 10. Also, the top eight riders (excluding Schwartz who must qualify overseas) are automatically in the World Qualifier next year. The way they ended in final points are: Lance King (65), Mike Bast (62). Bobby Schwartz (58). Mike Faria (54). Alan Christian (51). Milte Curoso (42). Paul Orlandi (55). Gene Woods (55). Steve Lucero (55). (All are seeded into the World Qualifier.) Dave Sims (32). john Sandona (51). Dubb Ferrell (51). Duane Yarrow (50) and Keith Larsen (25) are also in the Nationals. The reserves are Bobby McLain (22) and Shawn McConnell (19). • @ @ @ @ ~ @ @ @ m~. ~. ~ ~~i ~~ i @ @ @ @ When man and machine are pushed to the limit, there's no margin for safety • @ @ @ @ @ Raised Integrated Collar @ @ Shock c:tlsabing llinyl helps proIecl colla booe and helps OIIOid whiplash. @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ Shoulder Plates High impact. plastic and shoet< ct:>SOlbing toam helps protect shoulder regiOn. .: ~ ~ @ @ ~ Chest ana Upper Bock Plates ~ @ !•• ~ @ @ @ @ High impocl plastic shield hetps @ protect heart and @ 1l.ngS from puncture. @ I @ @ Safely Buckle @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ @ Lower Bock Plate @ @ High impocl plastic shield helps protect ribs. liver. kidney and spine.
