Ed Lemco [; Associates Kyle LIIndrum leeds evemual winner "Dynemite'" Dan Conway at Rio Bravo. drum at Rio Bravo MX Park tbday. Pressure mounted for . Landrum as Conway and David McClain got out ip front of him at the start of the first Expert moco. Not half a lap went by, however, before Landrum put McClain behind him. Fourth and fifth spots were taken by Scott HighlanQ and Donny Wilburn. Conway was pulling Landrum till he missed a gear and gave Landrum some edging up time which proved more of a mistake than he thought, as on lap four Landrum eased past him at the scoring booth. Landrum pulled really hard after his pass to gain some yardage on Conway, though he repeated Dan's misshifting act. and Conway was eager to pounce on his tail as the pair gradually removed themselves from third place McClain's sight. To make matters worse for McClain, he overshot a sweeper and did some land· scaping before returning to his rightful turf. The gate dropped for moco two, and scenes were reversed from the last start. This time Landrum claimed the front spot as Conway, McClain .and Highland followed suit. On the second lap, the leaders were again Landrum -and his close competitor Conway; however, they didn't have to worry about any demands on their positions by McClain for the moment as he went down in the same sweeper he misjudged the first moto and was passed by Highland in the process. Conway's pursuit of Landrum continued for two more laps till he finally got around him and shot Out of everyone's reach. Landrum slowed drama_tically and kept looking down toward the rear of his bike obviously detecting trouble. McClain had recovered his previous position in front of Highland by this time and could see Landrum ·up ahead. Having a moving target to aim for, he overcame him in the back stretch of drop-offs, clocking in.at the ........ finish line 19 seconds behind first place winner Conway. Bryan Marquadt claimed first in the first moco of the 125cc Beginner class. Randy Neika was his only dose contender while Ken Belknap. Steve Ellstrom and Lloyd Clayton huddled together quite a ways behind him. Bryan received no challenge from Neika and rode the rest of the laps out from and alone. Belknap and Clayton removed themselves from Elstrom and tuned in on Neika. On the very last lap, Belknap gave it all he had to get close enough to Neika to execute a maneuver which would grant ..:.. second place. He went all out an<;. ';". rocketed over the last jump, passi.. ; Neika in the air with less than 50 feet to go to reach the finish line and he acquired his rightful second place position. In the second moto. Clayton secured first and gave Marquadt the quota of exercise he missed during the first race. The two rode the race undaunted by their peers. Several times Marquadt would edge up on Clayton but nothing ever came of it and Clayton crossed the line fiTst. Trent Oman led the 250cc Novice class off the line pursued by Mac McCasland, Ben Rushing and Joe Machon. Oman stretched out his lead by lap two, but McCasland still fought to keep their distance as short as possible. The three-way battle continued behind him as Machon was really putting the pressure on Rushing, especially in the comers. On lap four, Machon became less of a threat when he applied a little too much rear brake while attempting a tight left turn around a tree at the top of a)) uphill. He stalled the engine, and McCasland left him with. Lance Guidry trailing him. Oman touched the finish line first as McCasland was just catching up to him. Moto two saw Oman out front again hounded by Machon, who was a real threat till the second to last lap when his front end slid out in a comer pulling him down and letting Oman secure first overall for the day. The 250cc Intermediate and Open class combined to form what appeared to be a MX school led by teacher Walter Rasmusson and trailing pupils Ronnie Russell, John Depperschmidt, Slade Putman and Richard Johnson. All followed Rasmusson's instruction and never questioned his ability to be first. Pupil Putman did question Depperschmidt, however, and tried to pass but was quickly taught a lesson by Deptterschrt:'idt who blocked all his attempts. The class lined lJP again and Chuck Adams dared to be first off the line and held that position for four laps till Rasmusson powered his Honda' past Adams and won tire first place iron. • The Motorcycle People (503)967-8536 DISCOUNT OTORCYCLE TIRES Servica While You Wait ~ Over 1000 Tires in Stock Burbank Yamaha .0. t- New 1979 ~ YZ250F Wheel T.... • T. .
