TEN YEARS - AGO 00 0') Dick Mann regained the lead in the AMA Grand National Championship Series point standings, and he didn't even have to get out on the track to do it. Following the July !II, 1971 Corona (CA) half mile National, Mann and several other riders protested the faulty start of one of the two semi races. A four-man appeal board upheld the protest, and awarded the riders in that semi points up through 20th place in the National. Under the point system used at the time, Mann picked up 28 points for a 14th place finish (12 were admitted to the field in the actual race) and jumped ahead of Gene llomero to lead by six points. Factory CZ rider Brad Lackey returned from Europe, and showed his new skills at a CMC North race at FretDont, CA, as he took on Mark Blackwell and others in the Open Senior class. Despite a ton of mechanical troubles, such as a broke.n shock and a rear brake rod, Brad went !I-2-2 to win on his rubber-dove-onthe-handlebars bike. Tim Hart (Mai) won the 250cc Senior class, and Bultaco-mounted Kenny Zahrt topped the 125cc Seniors. Suzuki's lloger :oeco.ter became 500cc World Motocross Champion with a win in the final round at Holland. Title contender Ale JODllOn blew a spark plug out of the head of his Maico in the first moto, but came back to win the second for sixth overall. Warner lliley rode a nitro-burning 1480cc Harley-Davidson Sportster with partial streamlining to an average speed of 200.298 mph at Bonneville, thus joining the select 200 MPH Club. In the annual Aqua Festival road races in Austin, TX, Norton-mounted Mike Odem was the big winner, taking both Open Production and Open GP titles. Jack O'Leary, a name more well known in motocross circles, was the 500cc Production winner on an R5 Yamaha. AMF announced some management changes at Harley-Davidson. William H. Davicbon was promoted from president to chairman of the board, John H. O'Brien was named as president and chief executive officer, and John Davicbon was promoted to executive vice president in charge of marketing. 250 Expert Winner Brothers Gary and Hank Scott finished 1-2 in a short track main event at EI Toro, CA. TT racing was also on the evening's card, and Tom Berry and Morris Malone were among the class winners. Billy Liles Billy Liles relies on Hi-Point from head to toe as well as the rubber he puts on the ground. llick Woods won both the Scratch and Handicap main events at Costa Mesa's weekly speedway race. The Division 2 winner was Scott Sivadge while the two Division !I finals went to Erwin Moon and Steve Stricklin. The International Four. Owners Association began a challenge to the "no motorcycles allowed" rull" on New Jersey's Golden State Parkway.
