Reid speeds to
Corona win
By Ron Lawson
CORONA, CA, AUG. 14
Team Kawasaki's Warren Reid
made his way out to Corona
Raceway last week for a taste of
the local competition. He went
home, as expected. with top cash in
the 250cc Pro ctass, but Greg Zitterkopf
of Montclair Yamaha and Malcolm
Smith's Eric MacCracken (Yam) both
did their best to keep it from being
easy.
The race 'began with Zitterkopf on
top while Reid and MacCracken trail·
ed. In fourth place was Honda-mounted
Scott Wilkinson, holding off Fred
Combs (Yam)'andJeff Prieur (Yam) at
the end of lap one. But the action was
up front. Zitterkopf knew his way
around the pseudo-supercross night
track well enough to keep his lead, but
Reid was putting his stadium experience
to use. Corona has a washboard whoop
section reserved for Pros only that
Reid could gain nearly a second on
every lap. As the race came into its
final laps Zitterkopf was still on top,
but it was Reid who became number
one just a few turns before the checkered
flag. MacCracken was never more
than a couple of seconds behind
throughout the race.
Promoter/announcer Ron Crandall
quoted Zitterkopf over the address
system as saying that he wasn't going
to let Reid by him again in the second
round, putting the pressure on the
lanky Yamaha pilot to put 101 % into
his race. And Zitterkopf came through
by pulling another holeshot. But Reid
and his 'SO model works Kaw were hot
in second place, and soon it appeared
unlikely that Zitterkopf would be able
to hold off the green steamroller. It
was on the third lap that Reid took
over. That left Zitterkopf in second
place, but by no means able to relax
with MacCracken breathing down his
neck. A duel began to develop for
second place as Reid whittled out a
small lead. But at the finish line it was
still Zitterkopf in the number two spot
and MacCracken had to be content
with third. Finishing fourth once more
was Scott Wilkinson (Hon).
.
Jim VermiIlion (Yam) of Pomona
Yamaha and Rocket Rex Racing was
the man to top the 250cc Novice class.
He stormed through both motos to
make it a double win while Robert
Wedner (Yam) compiled a couple of
seconds. Ray Groom (Hon) rounded
out the top three in both motos.

Reid, Hall top Pros
atOCIRMX
By Steven Crosby
IRVINE, CA, AU<:. III
Factory Kawasaki rider Warren
Reid came out for some night
riding and put it to the 250cc
Pros in Thursday night action.
Reid had an easy time in both motos,
pulling away from the pack each time.
Roost Factory's Tony Gomez was second each moto with support Can-Am
rider Juan Benavidez third each time.
]n the 125cc ranks Harley Hall came
out on top after trading wins with
Randy Skinner. All the Pros are getting
ready for the big Pro Showdown race
Sept. II with $500 up for grabs.
A large group of Mini Novices provided the best action in the first few
races. In moto one Aaron Woody
grabbed the holeshot with his Kawasaki.
In second place was Thayne Zito,
running his flJ'St race as a Novice. Jim
Nelson started out in third place with
Greg Armstrong fourth. Woody opened
up a slight lead with Zito and Nelson
dicing for third. Nelson could never
get by and the finishing order was the
same as when they started.
In the second moto Woody again
jumped into the lead but suffered
mechanical problems, was passed and
retired after two laps.
Zito, who had a good start in the
first moto, was stuck in the pack from
the start and couldn't make up much
ground. Armstrong was now in the
lead with Nelson second and Wade
Bone third. Bone was back a waY' but
the Rustan rider was able to make up
ground and pass Nelson with two laps
left. Armstrong's 4-] was enough for
the overall win with Nelson's ll·ll
second and Bone's 5-2 third.
Of the three 125cc Beginner divisions
the tightest racing was in the second
group. Bob Haney put his Yamaha
into the first moto lead but crashed on
the second lap and dropped back to
seventh. Anaheim Suzuki's Mike
Medlin took over the lead with Steve
Ness second and Greg Augustine
third. They kept it close but couldn't
change the order of things.
]n the second moto Haney took the
early lead again. Mike Landgraf was
second out of the gate with Brian
Bates third. The three tightened up
and on the fourth lap Bates poured it
On and passed the other two to take the
lead. Landgraf was slowing down a bit
at the end and on the last lap Augustine
and Medlin flew by for third and
fourth. Medlin's 1-4 was the overall
best with Augustine's ll-ll Second and
Bates' 6-1 third.
