in his Ventura debut.
All this was second rate thrills
indeed compared to the Bikini Contest
Semi-finals. The six winners left little
to the imagination (one would've left
nothing to the imagination if Lucero
had been more successful at ripping
her bikini off). In any case, the Gone
With The Wind of Skin concludes next
week (Aug. 25) in the Bikini Contest
Finals. The winner receives a motorcycle and the future opportunity to
write "Miss Ventura Raceway" on her
resume.

Cogar, King split
wins in San Berdoo
By Scott Daloisio
SAN BERNARDINO, CA, AUG. 19
Weslake's newest factory rider,
Lance King, continued his domination of the southern California
speedway circuit by scoring a
clean sweep in the Scratch portion of
the program at John LaDouceur's
Inland Motorcycle Speedway Wednes·
day night.
Shawn
McConnel
(Slim
Towing/Riding High Jawa) drew the
pole and was the first out of the gate
over Jim Fishback (Carpets Galore
Fontana/Yamaha of Covina Jawa),
Gene Woods (7-Up Godden) and
King, who came from the number four
spot on the Wild West Stores/Off
Shore Weslake built by his father.
McConnell's lead was short· lived as
Woods went to the cushion with King
on the inside to sandwich him back to
third down the back chute on lap one.
Woods and King renewed their battle
of one week ago as they put the crowd
on their feet with a two lap side-byside duel. The Cradley Heath-bound
18-year-old found a hole on the inside
in tum two on lap three and slipped by
for the lead. Woods stayed close but
was unable to get back by the next
King of England. Fishback got by
McConnell and came home third.
Sterling Cogar rode what may have
been the best race of his career as he
defeated King in a wheel-to·wheel
duel to capture his second straight
IMS Handicap main. Rob Pfetzing
(Hoffman Photography Jawa) got the
jump on the pack on the start from the
zero followed by Cogar (Phil's Custom
Plating Jawa) and Steve Lucero
(Lucero Machine Jawa). Cogar, who
start(d on the 20, went inside Pfetzing
in turn two on the second lap for the
lead.
On the same lap, King and Lucero
sandwiched Pfetzing to get by for
second. Fishback had what he believed
were valve problems and dropped out
on lap three. King got by Lucero and
went after Cogar. The two leaders
raced elbow to elbow over the final two
laps keeping the fans on their feet. At
starter Sid Sutton's checkered, it was
Cogar by a half foot in another heartstopper. King took second followed by
Lucero,
Woods,
Pfetzing
and
Fishback.
Guy Ermolenko, who lunched a
motor last week, came out with a

brand new Jawa and smoked the field
in the Second Division main.
Ermolenko took the lead from the zero
on the start over Tim McCasland Oaw)
and Dave Wooten (Nautilus Plus/Pro
Circuit Products Weslake). Kerry
Miller Oaw) got by Wooten for third
on the outside at the end of lap one.
Steve Bauer (Ashgrove Jawa) took
third from Miller at the end of lap
two. Ermolenko had went into hiding
and won by a huge margin over
McCasland. Bauer, Miller, Robin
Bourgeios Oaw) and Wooten.
Mark Weaver rode the Mesa Verde
Barber Salon Jawa to victory in the
Third Division main. It took three
tries to get the wild affair started with
Weaver taking the lead on the final
attempt
over
Kenny
Bencheck
(Renne's Surf and Sport Weslake).
Robby Stone Oaw) got second from
Bencheck but couldn't reel in Weaver.
Craig Young (Simmon's Electric Jawa)
got by Bencheck for third with nonfinishers Keifer Doege (Wes) and Scott
Talkington (Apollo Metal Spinning
Jawa) rounding out the pack.
Future speedway SUperst~T Ronnie
Corey held back Jimmy Busby to take
his second IMS Junior Speedway main
in a row. Corey got by Dave Busby for
the lead on lap two and then had to
fight offJimmy over the final two laps.
Dave hung on for the number three
spot followed by Jesse Finch, Jordan
Duncan and Bobby Cody.
Mike Mazzacane took the wildest
spill of the year at IMS as he
catapulted over the crash wall on the
front chute and crashed into the chain
link fence. Surprisingly the young
rider was only shaken and was able to
walk off the track with assistance from
his father.
Rex "The Rocket" Staten made his
speedway debut in Third Division
tonight.
Unfortunately
he
was
involved in two crashes and was forced
to watch his race from the infield.
Here's a correction on last week's
story. In the Scratch main, Gene
Woods rode a Godden to the victory.
In the Second Division main, Dennis
Briggs rode the same Godden to the
victory. In last week's story both were
listed as being aboardJawas.
Aug. 26 will be the National Cham·
pionship Qualifier at IMS. Dave
DeTemple (broken ankle) and Mike
Bast (badly cut left heel) are expected
to compete in the big event. It will be
an all Scratch program featuring the
top riders in the country. The first
race bumps olI at 8 p.m. with the
same low weekly price for admission.
