CIty - s..ch11Pt -SIde...... Rea A four-mile track was originally laid out by Rolf Tibblin, Lan Larsson and the Imperial Valley M.C. The Sports Committee added about a half of a mile in the rough back section. It had s0mething for everyone. The Foland family was out in force. Jeff took the Open win, Ed got the 125s and pretty Pam Niles Foland fin· ished in the top 10 behind hubby Ed. All c1asles started in two waves. In the Open race Foland got right to his rut in the fint tum. Down he went but recovered to get into fourth behind leader Craig Corda, Ed Foland and Mike Tripes. On the second lap Ed Foland disappeared, and Corda led Tripes, Foland and Leon Livingston, who was dicing it with Chip Howell. By the third loop Corda had dropped out and Tripes had the lead over Foland and Howell. On the fourth loop Foland put it to Tripes, and cruised the rest of the way. Just before the checkered flag Howell passed Tripes for second. The 250cc class brought everyone out of the woods. Larry Roeseler led Mike Tripes by 18 seconds on the fint loop with Wayne Martin third and Darin Cartwright fourth. Roeseler was sailing 26 seconds ahead of Tripes into the third lap. Wayne Martin hung on for third, two minutes down. Now in traffic, Roeseler put another minute on Tripes by the end of the fourth loop but that was where Lady Luclt left Larry. As he put his left foot down for a turn, an old knee injury popped baclt to haunt him. Roeseler headed for the pits and an icebag. "It hasn't bothered me for a long time," said Roeseler, "but when I put my foot down I felt it go out. It's such a sick feeling. I've got it back in but only time will tell how bad it is hurt." Tripes now had a clear ride. Martin was gaining but not enough to catch Mike before the finish. Cartwright finished third and Robert Nolan was fourth. On the fint loop in the 125cc race Don Seay, Jr. led with Foland second, M'tke Fisher third and Bill Mattox fourth. On the second loop, Seay crashed and Foland jumped right by. Smooth and consistent were the next three laps, each at an event seven minutes. Seay was gamely moving up but Fisher hung on to the second. Denny Russell held the Novice lead in there with the Experts till a broken shift lever ended his gallant run. Foland (El Cajon Yam) finished fint over Fisher and Seay. The Vets class had a big entry. Lynn McGraw led it all the way with Bill Silverthorn on his tail. "It was a good race," said McGraw. "I got knocked down twice coming into traffic. I hit my brakes and it felt like I just got knocked over. Twice - can you believe it?" And can you believe Claude Maynard rode while still recovering from a broken wrist and shoulder? Another top Vet, Monte Lee, was recovering from five cracked ribs. Both finished. In the Senior division Amateur Dan Drew led the pack the entire race. A battle wenT on between Paul Ziegler and Jack Neeley for second spot. Ziegler led Neeley the fint two loops. Neeley had problems up a hill with a sticking throttle. He struggled through it and passed Ziegler on the third lap. Drew took the checkered flag in fine style with Neeley second, Ziegler third and Harry Brattin pulled in for fourth. It was a good turnout for the summer break. The Manzanita Indian Tribe's cooperation was great. D·58 is now pow wowing for more races on the reservatipQ. _... ••..•••••• ~. No brag. Fact.
