The Amateur/Experts left the Iioe with Donnie Monison (Yam) out front followed by Bill Simons Engi~'s Pfte PoIteI (Yam) and Mootelair Yamaha's Darin Cartwright. Morrison _ down, and it was Postel, Cart· wright and Doug Palmer (Yam) up front. On the last lap coming out of homr cbeclt. Postel got off the trail and Cartwright caught up. Postel found the trail. and bodl came together. For the next five miles it was handle· bar-banging, Ieathfi·s1apping racing. At chedt one they catoe through in lock power slides ~. Then POIteI hit a buried rock and bailed. Unhurt. Postel remounted a badly damaged bilr.e. with Doug Palmer still in third. At the finish Cartwright was waiting about 10 feet from the finish line. and he waved Postel through! (That's floyd's Boys.) So it was Postel. Cartwright and Palmer. Over on the A course it was the Beginner/Novice bilr.es going at it. At the finish it was Rich Tieben (Yam) talr.ing the win with Sean Johnson (Suz) second. At 9:15 a.m. the Women's Division left the line for a try at the A course. About a half mile out it was June Elias leading Fullfiton Yamaha's Lori Farmer. and then along came Jones Papa Don Jones that is, fathfi of exmotocross Champion Gary Jones. The Seniors left the line on the B course at the same time as the Women's Division and in the dust and confusion the elder Jones started following the gals. Aftfiwards he conunented. "I wondered why I was doing so good." Farmer got the win with Elias second. The ~5Occ Amateur/Expert bash got undfiway with Darin Cartwright (Montclair Yam) sprinting to a lead. Around the first loop it was now Cliff Thomas in the lead by 50 seconds with Cartwright second and Dan Ashcraft (Pro Circuit Hus) third. On the second loop Cartwright tried to part a pucker bush that stuck his throttle wide open. . This left him sitting on the ground. At the finish it was Thomas in for the win with Ashcraft second. Afterwards Asb· craft said. 'This is the roughest coune I've ridden all year." First Amateur in was Randy Jones. Next race up was the Open Amateur/ ExPfil. By now the choppy. flat B course was covered by two to 10 inches of soft silt which hid potholes and roeIr.s. It was Corry Timms ~ting the boIeshot with the rest of the pack behind him. Bill Saltzman (Mai) left the Iioe last. Around the first lap it was Bruce 0giMe (Yam) followed a few seconds back by Chuclr. Miller (Hus), then came Tnnms and Kfin ~rt Cycle's Dan Smith (Hus). Sauth pUled Tnnms, OgiMe seized and Miller ran out of gas. At the finish it was Smith taIr.ing the win with Timms IttOnd and Bill Saltzman in for third. (How does he do it?) Founh ridfi in was Brett Howell (Hus). Smith's comment on the course was. Thomas takes thePepsi Challenge By Norm Johnson SHADOW MOUNTAIN, CA. JULY~5-~6 26 Montclair Yamaha's Cliff Thomas won the 250cc Amateur/Expert division both days at the Badgers M.C. Annual Pepsi Challen~ D-57 Dual European Scrambles. The race was held at Shadow Mountain, which hasn't been used for five years and it brought back memories of the DRA days for some of the older riders. Seturdey The events started at 8 a.m. Saturday morning with- the O-l'l5cc-Amateurl dusL" Over on the A course first Open Novice went toJim Simplr.ins (Hus). At the end of the day's events the Bad~rs had a drawing for numerous contingencies. Among the things given away Wfie SBE CB radios, Bell Helmets. Turner milr.es. PJI lubricants, Kal·Gard products and Pepsi Cola. Sunday The courses were reveikd for Sunday's races. The first race up was the 0·175cc Amateur/Expert on the A 1+ course. It was Tom Elias (Yam) who took the win with Pete Postel second and Donnie Monison third. Over on the .B side it was Rich Tiehen getting acrog the finish line first again, taking the Novice win £01IowaI by Marlr. Purser and Leonard &erooe. The Women's Division was taken again by Lori Fannfi, £ono-d by Jolene Payne and Debbie Hopkins. At the start of the !5Occ Amateur/ Experts it was Cliff Thomas taking the ~ad with Chuck Stearns (Up·Tite Hus) in second. First Amateur over the hill was Ray "Buclteroo" Conway. Thomas was really burning the track and at the end of the first loop he had a one minute lead over second place Stearns. Dan Ashcraft came around third. At the finish it was Thomas taking the gold with a hard charging Stearns second followed by Ashcraft. First Amateur was Scott Dinger with Gorgone second. The most dramatic race of the day had·to be the Senior Amateur/Expert division, with Invader AI Guzman and ShamrocIt Dave Deicbman trying to get the trail first. Deichman got it, but at the end of the first loop it was a mysterious KTM ridfi ~ading followed by Morris Nonnan (Hus). Gary Charters and Guzman. By the second lap Norman had moved up IIlIIDe on the phantom rider, and Chaners was still holding down third, first C biRo The Badga's had their suspicionS about the unknown rider with the Senior numbfi. On the last lap Nonnan pushed his 450 Husky to the max, and at the last minute he passed the mysterious pilot. At the finish three rathfi large Badgfi members removed the unknown ridfi from his bilr.e and his helmet from his head. It turned out to be a ~l-year-old motOCTOllS ace from Den· marlr. - seems some Senior ridfi needed some extra points. Second ridfi in was Charters fol· lowed by Ron Bebo, the flJ'St ~50cc Senior. Jim Bringhurst (Hus) was first ~5Occ Veteran, and second 17Sec Senior wasJim Harris. The Open Amateur/Experts roared off the Iioe the last race of the day. It was Dan Smith to tbe trail first with Montclair Yamaha's Greg Thomas not far behind. Around the first loop it was Smith, Ogilvie and Thomas. On the second loop Ogilvie paased Smith for the lead and was nevn beaded. At the finish it was Ogime, Smith and Thomas. First Amateur was Greg McConnick. Over on the B course it was Jim Sim~ns ~ading the Open Beginner/ NOVIce start. About halfway through Simpkins bailed and gave the ~ad to Doug Kibbe. Kibbe came in for the win with Mike FmkJe IttOnd and RUIBdI Pike third. At the finish of Sunday's events, the Badgers had more goodies to give away. The general opinion of the courses: everyone liIr.ed the A course. The B coune drew mixed emotions. The weathfi was in the high 90s bodl days but bearable. All togethfi, a well put on race. JULY 12 Jeff Foland overcame the dust and a big rut with his name on it to notch the Open win at the D58 Manzanita Grand Prix. .
