In the second mota McMahon took
the lead out of the first turn but then
encountered mechanical difficulties
again and had to retire from the race.
Past that point the order remained the
same as the first mota: Peterson in front
followed by Gomez, Hall and Randy
Skinner.
Over 60 minibikes turned out Thursday night and the hottest action was
found in the Novice race. Randy
Gatica jumped out on top in the first
mota with Aaron Woody, Jim Nelson
and Glenn Tucker following. On the
third lap Woody put his Kawasaki past
Gatica for the lead. The next lap
Nelson was able to move into second.
Greg Armstrong, who hadn't been out
in some time, moved into fourth p1ace
on th'at same lap. Woody stayed in
front for the win but the middle of the
pack kept the battle going. The lap
after Armstrong took fourth, Kurt
Strand came flying up from sixth to
t",ke over that fourth spot and held on
to the finish.
In the second mota Armstrong put
his Kawasaki up front out of the gate.
Nelson was second and Woody third.
Woody crashed on lap four, moving
Gatica up to third and Tucker into
fourth. On the last lap second place
Nelson went down and Gatica took
second with Tucker moving into third.
The overall results showed Gatica's 1l·2
best with Armstrong's 5-1 good for
second and Kurt Strand's 4-4 third.

Maloney, Murray
master Speedway
IJ7MX
By Rod Eschenburg .
CHULA VISTA, CA,JULY 22
In a repeat of preceeding weeks,
Escondido Honda nder Bryan
Maloney topped the 250cc Pros,
and Terry Murray (Suz) squeaked through in the 125cc Intermediates.
For Maloney t was a two for two sweep
with a come from behind second mota
win over Yamaha-mounted 'Woody
Carlson. However, .for Murray it was a
real cliff-hanger as he took the victoryover Mitch Palmer (Suz) with a 1-3
effort over Palmer's 1-1 go. Scott
Sargent (Suz) gave them both fits as he
ended up third with a 2-4 finish after
leading both motos.
For some reason, the 1981 CocaCola/KPRI season at Speedway 117
has produced very large fields of 500cc
Inte.rmediates and Juniors. We're not
arguing mind you, but usually the
tight, "jumpy" counes are not in favor
with the big bore machines. The Intermediates were especially.good, with
Yamaha·mounted Bob Browne coming
home the winner over point leader
"Rocket Ric" Mahlmeister after two
real wild motos. The 500cc Junion saw
lots of riders take. soil samples and
when it was over Ed Dunn had a close
victory over Monte Lutz with Eric Larson almost upsetting the whole works.
No report on Speedway 117 would
be complete without tall
