Hames came off the line loaded for bear in the Open Money shon track. Honda·mounted Johnlon locked into second with Cunis Cannon, his first time out on a big bike, third. Two laps later Johnson had his Harley running strong and had moved into second. Hames continued to set a blistering pace, turning in the low 211s, which is excellent on a 'summer track. Johnson was playing a game of catch up but time ran out and he settled for second with Cannon third. The Open Expen battles were split between Joel Windham and Keith Guthery. The shon track belonged to Windham all the way while Guthery had to contend with Jim Snow for the second spot. Curlio Cannon !Yom!. _ --------- ~-------------~~~-----------~ and winners turn to Je", By Bang Bang Bobo VALENCIA, CA,jULY 19 The Over the Hill Gang met at Indian Dunes to sweat out an· other hot summer day of motocross. With the temperature in the high 90's, any amount of shade was appreciated by this ~r 50 group. Perhaps for the same reason, California Racing Club's Jack Barbacovi opted to hold the races on the Shadow Glen track, "where the shady trees keep the track cool:' he said, or something like that. In moto one, Expen class rider Roll~ Rick charged the gate, getting his Yamaha out front. Daisy Dan -was pressing a half bikelength behind him. Stubby Steve, Jungle Joe, Jelly John aM Run-over Ron followed in that order. Halfway into the third lar. Daisy Dan's Maico ate its chain, eaving Stubby Steve and Jelly John to punue Roll-over Rick. Rick placed first in moto on~ with Steve and John coming in second and third, respectively. Moto two, however, saw Jungle Joe leading the pack through the first lap with Daisy Dan pressuring him to pass. Before the end of lap one, Daisy Dan took the lead away fr~m Jungle Joe and went on to finish the moto in first place which gave him a score of 5-1 for a third overall finish. Second place overall went to hard riding, tenacious Stubby Steve who tallied 2·11. The. coveted first place spot went to Jelly John White with his score of 11-2. Roll-over Rick was in the middle of lap two, riding in founh position when Greg Barbacovi, the very descriptive track announcer, was heard to say, "RolI·~r Rick just went down in front of the observation tower and he's doing a roll-over'" Rick scored 1·5 which gave him a founh overall. The Amateurs left the gate in the second wave right behind the Experts. Ding Dong Dennis (Yam) worked his way up through the pack to finish moto one in third place. He came back in 'the second mow, passing jester Jeny halfway into the first lap to take the lead. He was able to hold off hard charging Kwik Keith and finished with a score of ll·l to win first place. Kwik Keith's score w~ just the reverse, I-ll, -Which gave him second place overalL. Both Keith and Dennis had to get by Jester Jerry in each moto which was no easy task. Though Jester Jeny got the holeshot in both motos he wasn't able to hold his lead, settling for a 2-4 third place ahead of Bing Bong Bell and Too-Tall Tim. Intermediate Varmit Vic returned to the Gang after staying away for months. (Well, maybe it seemed that long.) However.. Vic didn't lose any of his speed. In the first moto he took the lead away from Wipe-out Wiley, who bobbled after getting the holeshol, and showed the way to the checkers with only a little pressure from Jalapeno Jose and Bang Bang Bobo. In the second moto, he again took the lead away from Wipe· out Wiley, but this time Jumpin' Jack got in front of him. Vic slipped by Jumpin' Jack, only to have Dynamite Dave on his tail. Vic gave in to the pressure, allowing Jalapeno Jose and Dynamite Dave to blast by. The overall win went to Jalapeno Jose who tallied 2-1. Varmit Vic settled for a I·ll second and third went to Vegas chapter member Dynamite Dave who finished 4·2. In the Novice class it W3S/ Sweet Skeets who led his group from start to finish in both motos, scoring I-I for first place. How sweet it was! Bubbles Bruce had to work his way through traffic from fourth and fifth positions to finish 2-11 for second place. Boner Bob finished with a score of 1l·4 for a respectable third place.
