TEN YEARS AGO Ra~y in Corona,CA, h~ an AMA Grand National Championship Series half mile, which went to Yamaha-mounted Jim Odom. Although Odorn led from wire to wire, he was never more than a wheel ahead of Harley·Davidson's Mark Brelaford. GeDe R.omero, back in action follow' ing a l5-day suspension for falsifying a medical report, finished third on a Tri· umph. In the l4-lap Junior main, Gary Scott (Tri) let KenDy R.obertl (Yam) lead for 10 laps before moving into the lead and taking the win. The night was marred by a crash in one of the Junior heats, where Loyal PeDD suffered ultimately fatal injuries. Corona RACinG DfmAnD. And Koplng Up With It ! fSPRlr PRO II()()B Czechoslovakian Vlastimil Valek (CZ) went 4-5-2 to win the fmal round and the overall championship of the Inter·AMA Motocross Series, held at New York's Unadilla circuit. Fellow CZ rider Daft Bielen was second on the day and second in the series. Riding a Montna, Peter Lamppu was the first American across the line at third overall. Gary JODCI (Yam) was eighth at Unadilla and finished the series in Ie'Ymth, the highest.pIacing' American. The Isle of Man was to be the site of the International Six Days Trial, and the AMA announced the '71 U.S. ISDT team. Riding on the Pentonequipped World Trophy team were Jack Penton, Tom PentoD, Jeff Penton, Dick BurleMJll, Lan La1WOD and Gene CaDlUldy. There were two Silver Vase teams. The "A" team was the Husky-mounted quartet of J.N. R.obertl, Malcolm Smith, R.OD BohD and Jack Lehto. The "8" team, on Puchs, was comprised of Gerald PachoIke, Bill Uhl, PreatoD Petty and Steve Hurd. The American Motocross Team finally became a team when Barry Higgins Joined BryaD KeDDey in Europe. But m their first race together in France, both were victims of crashes. The desert got a little quieter when the Barstow M.C. hosted a hare scrambles run for the first time under D-57's new mandatory silencer rule. R.ich Thorwalcbon (Suz) was the overall winner, followed by Larry Pfutzenreuler{BuJ). At fifth overall was the first Trailbilr.e, piloted by Greg Hawb (H·D). The first Amateur to finish was Brian Klock. A $1000 purse drew some top motocross talent to Indian Dunes, where JOhD DeSoto (Suz) bested Bill Clementi (Hus) and JOhD R.ice (Mai) in the Open Expert class. The 250cc Expert cash went to Tom R.app (Bul) as he downed Tim Hart (Mai) and Clements. Larry Watkinl took the l25cc Expert laurels ahead of fellow DKW rider Gene Cannady and Bryar Holcomb (Ric). An AMA Pro IT in Graham, WA, saw Emil Ahola (Tri), R.aDdy Skiver (Tri) and Steve Baker (Yam) win the Expen, Junior and Novice main events.• 19
