Exhaust, NGK and SBS Brakes, were on the move in the final two houn of the race, despite some hairy tanblappen through the comen. After the race, with Erode and Klinzmann listed in third, they were looking to file a protest. "I feel we finished third," said Mitchell. "From our scoresheets it showed us ahead of them, so we're defmitely going to protest third, as soon as we fmd out how to do it." The other two top fmishen reported only minor problems. Eagen and Steward had several problems during a tire change that stretched a one-minute operation into a three-minute ordeal. Vallegra and Greene had to change the front brake pads at the four-hour mark. The results printed helow are as given to the press room, and: as we said before, highly unofficial. Charles Morey and Kariya RIVERSIDE, CA,JULY 26 As far as being a race, the Battle of the Twins prelude to the SixHour didn't even come close. Jimmy Adamo and his Reno Leoni-tuned Ducati blasted off from the pole position seizing an immediate lead and set an astonishing pace for the entire 121aps. An early lap of one minute, 57.6 seconds put him within a second and a half of Eddie Lawson's fast time set Saturday on his superbike. By the time the checkered flag dropped, Adamo had thoroughly decimated the field, lapping all but runner-up David Emde on his San Jose BMW. "That's it for the BMWs," Adamo exclaimed later, "they ain't gonna win no more'" A pre-race favorite, Erode hung with Adamo until they hit the back straight, then Adamo started to motor away. Emde tried to maintain the quick pace for a short while before backing it off a notch in order to conserve himself for a long day of racing ahead. Wendall Phillips took his Norton to a !IOlid third after dicing for the position with several othen during the fint half of the race !>dore they fell out with mechanical difficulties. Larry Theobald rode throu!th the pack to finish fourth, getting by Frann Surtelli in the latter stages of the race. Both rode Moto-Guzzis. Results SATTLE Of THE 1W1NS: 1. Jimmy Ad8mo (Due); 2. Charles Morey and Kariya RIVERSIDE, CA, JULY 26 David Emde came out on top of a pass/repass battle with Fred Merkel to edge the nonhern California rider on the final lap and win the 250cc GP race by scant feet. The race started with Todd Brown getting the jump on the field, Erode taking over in tum eight. However, the race was red.flagged on lap three when the Budweiser parachutist began his descent. (He jumped at the right time; the races started late.) Erode controlled the second start and tried quickly to put distance on the pack. Laguna Seca's Novice winner Merkel started to reel him back in, though, and by mid-race, the two began swapping the lead. While the leaders fought it out, Gill Martin closed from his third place position with John Glover a dangerously close .fourth. In fact, while catching up, Martin set an official lap record of 2:00.18, according to his tuner, Tony Smith. Martin and Glover were unable to improve upon their places, however. Merkel led as the white flag came out, but was unable to stave off Emde's final lap assault. The win took some of the sting out of Emde's earlier loss to Adamo and helped pump him up for the Six-Hour he would ride later with Harry Klinzmann. With the Erode/ Merkel battle and the closeness of the fint four, the 250cc race had to be the race of the day. Results 250 GP: 1. Dovid Emdo !Yom); 2. Fred MorkelIVom); 3. Gill MorJin IVom); •. AFM/Kawasaki Two-Hour to Statum/Krolick By Lori Tyson RIVERSIDE, CA, JULY 25 Terry Statum was the first off the starting line in the AFM/Kawasaki Two-Hour, a prelude to Sunday's Budweiser Six-Hour, and 120 minutes later he and partner Mike Krolick were still in the number one position. The fint lap showed the leaden (who were to hold the top three spots for the rest of the race) to be Terry Statum, Dennis Smith, and Chris Steward fint, second and third respectively in a very tight pack. Behind them was a menagerie of four different cluses of bikes, all with differing lines and speeds, challenging the skills of the riden in heavy traffic. The team having the dubious distinction of being the fint to drop out due to mechanical problems was the team of Boyd/McLaughlin, with four more teams eventually quitting due to getoffs or breakdowns. It took only four laps for the top three bikes to start lapping slower riden, putting demands on the leaden' skills of evasion. The leading order stayed the same until lap six when Dennis Smith of Cycle Tune took the front spot and gave Terry Statum a view from behind, just before Smith's pit stop and rider change put Kenny Farmer in the saddle. Statum also opted for a rider change as partner Mike Krolick took over for him. Chris Steward went in for gas, but decided he was having too much fun to quit just yet, and stayed on for a while longer. By lap 10, Farmer had taken the lead, with Steward second and Krolick third. Behind them were Sharpe/Sedillos, Robertson/Montoya, Snowden/Redmond, Beck/Montoya, Orella/Horio and Stein/Henneken. A pit stop in lap 17 by Chris Steward put Pat Eagan in the show. A lap later a surprised Pat got off in tum six. But due to a very fast pit stop and quick reactions by.Eagan, he was still in the lead with Smith behind him and Krolick in' third. By the 2!1rd lap, Smith and Krolick both passed a somewhat stunned Pat Eagan putting him back in the number three spot. But Pat showed his stuff, as he quickly regained second. Krolick then decided to rest for a bit and let Terry Statum take the reins for a while. In the following lap a hurting Eagan pulled in and limped off the bike as Steward hopped on and took off - in the lead. At this point, after 120 miles of full-out racing, the Statum/Krolick team was second, Smith/Farmer right behind in third, Robertson/Montoya, Hayes/Garvin, Sowden/Redmond, Beck/W. Montoya, Sharpe/Sedillos, Stein/Hanneken and Henninger/Bracken filling the top spots. In the end, after two long grueling houn, the team of Terry Statum/Mike Krolick took the win by a faint margin of only eigh11CCOOds over Chris Steward! Pat Eagan, with Smith/Farmer right on their tail at the finish line. • Results OVERAlL: 1. Torry StMumlMlko KroIid<; 2. CIwio S_ _ ~ ; 3. o.mlo SmilhIKonny F _ ; 4. John _ J o e MonlDyo; 5.
