Minnesota's Todd Elmer put a trio of victories together' to highlight the action, earning wins in the U5, i50 and Open A categories. Yamaha support rider Bill Stork gave Elmer his stiffest competition, trading moto wins and dogging in second in two of the three classes. In the Opens, Stork took over early in the first moto and managed to hold off the competition for the entire eight laps on the long, three-minute/lap circuit. Elmer played catchup, working past Keith Parmely, Keenan Greseth and Mike Schurmann to finally settle in to second, but with no chance of advancement. Scburmann trailed in third, with Greseth edging out Parmely. Round two saw Elmer grab the hole· shot and rocket into the lead, setting up a comfortable margin that would later be stretched out and prove to be insurmountable. Greseth, Stork and Schurmann ran a tight bunch for the first lap, but in trying to double-jump a quanet of stadium whoops on the backstretch of the track, Stork got off and feU back into eighth from his runner·up position. Greseth took his Kawasaki into second to make it a pair of KXs out front while Schurmann worked his way by Parmely, Burke Johnson and Russell Harwood and into third. After remounting, Stork cha~ back into founh by moto's end, which was IIood enough for the overall runner· up slot to Elmer, edging out Greseth, Schurmann and Parmley. In total state points for the class, Elmer took the state title over Stork as well, 414 points to 579. Schurmann picked up third, 98 points behind Stork. Burke Johnson and Russell Harwood rounded out the top five. As for the one·two·fives, Elmer and Stork again traded moto wins with Stork grabbing the first, ~hen Elmer coming on hard in the second round to grab the overall. As Elmer grabbed the holeshot in the second round, Stork suffered a bad start and had to work himself into the top 10 by the end of lap one. As he worked through the pack, Elmer was out front, stretching his lead with every lap. Stork worked past Ben Norfolk, Kevm Zeal an!i Clay Alexander to get into second, but as in the 5005, had no chance to catch Elmer. In the day's overalls, Elmer and Stork led in Norfolk, who had a 55 moto tally ahead of Alexander's 9-5 and Zeal's 8-4. For the cla-ltate championship, Kevin Zeal picked up enough points to beat Clay Alexander and Ben Norfolk, while Todd Gik\ing, who had a sixth in the day's overalls, and Dave Kahler ran four-five. For the i50s, Elmer found his first pair of moto wins in taking the overall, as he commandingly took his third class of the day. In round one, Perry Breek finished In second behind Elmer with Mark Ritter, Todd Gilbertson and Kevin Poole making up the rest of the top five, but it was Keenan Greseth who ran second in the fmal mota ahead of Ritter, Kelly Olson and Gilbertson. In the overalls, Elmer took top money with Ritter second, Greseth third, Gilbertson fourth and Poole fifth. State championship title went to Kelly Olson, who nudged Gilbertson out by U points. Bruce Pantzlte came into the day's race with the points lead, but two weeks earlier, he had brolten his left wrist and just rode around the track for the day to earn a few points, but he dropped to fourtb behind Poole in the standings, only eight points ahead of Mark Ritter. Some other botly-contested state title battles went in the Senior class, where a total of 11 points separated the first three riders. Taking the title was Bill Stork, father of the younger Stork in the A claswes, who fmished a mere four points ahead of Jim Bernard, and IIevet1 points back was Honda-mounted Bob Bailey. Jon Davis and LeRoy Evinlt rounded out the top five in the points, but the day's overalls went to Lyle Cook with Evinlt, Bailey, Stork and Bernard behind. Results MINI A; 1. Ledd _lVomI: 2.
