Ford muscled 1W way by Lawton coming out of tum two on the final lap for a well bani-earned victory. deterved, Lawton hung on for leCond with Bast third. Mike CUrolO, on the only Wes1ili in the field, took the founh spot ahead of Columbo and Lucero. Lance King protege Rick Miller took 1W initial Second Division victory at IMS. Miller. starting on lhe zero, took the lead on a J:eIlart over Eddy Lynch and Dave WOOlen. Wooten slowed momentarily coming out of lWO on lap two taking himself out of first place contention. Lynch was breathing down Miller's neck trying every trick in the book to get by with Miller continually closing the door. Lynch then took a spill coming out of four on the thIrd circuit. Ed Thurman, having nowhere to ~o, plowed into Lynch's bike becommg the victim of circumstances for the leCond time in the race. At this point, referee Irwin Moon declared the race over giving Miller the victory. Thurman proved that persistence pays off as he took the number two spot. Ron Blanton was third followed by Wooten, Lynch and Cary Fass. Tim McCasland rode 1W Maely to victory in the Third Division main with a couple of last lap passes. Jay Bowen took the lead on the start over Guy Ermolenko. Ermolenko went by for the lead in tum two and ran away from the pack on the back chute. Ermolenko went into tum three too hard, hitting the dirt and ending 1W night. On the restart, Baron Bibee took the lead Oft'!' Bowen and Scott Talking· ton. McCasland took third from Talkington on lap two. McCasland then dove to the inside to take the number two spot from .Bowen in tum two on the final lap. Bibee had led all the way, but McCasland went to the inside coming out of four on the final lap. and was able to lead the final half straightaway to take starter Sid Sulton'. checkered nag fint. Bibee was right on McCasland's rear tire for leCond. Talkington was third over Shane McDonald, Bowen, who fell coming out of the final comer while running third, and Ermolenko. July 8, IMS will hold a unique Match Race at intermission as IMS favorite Jim "The Animal" Fishback will challenge Steve Bauer to a mini motocrou race. Onluly 15, IMS will welcome one half 0 the 1981 World Best Pain Speedway Championship team as the "Boogaloo Kid," Bobby Schwartz, will be on hand. There was no Third Division main tonight. At intermission, lhe fans were trealed 10 a special running of lhe Junior Speedway main event. Jimmy llusby, usually a winner, spun out and finished a dissappointing last place. Taking the fint-place honors was popular Ronnie Corey followed by Greg Hancock, Jesse Finch, Cameron Evens, Joeh Nystrom and Busby. The Second Division main got off to a fast start wilh bOlh Andy Northrup and Bentley Barrett fighting for lhe fint place posilion. However, on lhe fourth lap, lhe race was red-flagged and enough laps had been compleled 10 call il an official race. Northrup was firsl followed by Barrett, Craig De Phillippi and Don Braviroff. The Handicap main provided fans with perhaps lhe wont looking wreck of lhe nighl. On the second lap, Chris Hedge, coming wide OUI of tum four, hit the wall, bounced off it acrOlll lhe track and langled bikes with Steve Lucero about 15 feel in front of the slaning gale. Lucero look lhe worsl fan as bolh bikes and riders went down hard. Lucero's bike was incapable of restarting, but he gol anomer bike. Lucero got up very slowly bUl said he was ready 10 race. Hedge was disqualified for causing the reslart. Keith f.anen again took lhe lead on lhe restart, and Ibis time no one could calch him. Coming OUI of the gate second was Lucero. but he had lroubles, and on lhe lhird lap, he fell back 10 lhird place. On lhe fourth lap both Sterling Cogar and Mike CUrOIO moved pasl, putting him into fifth place. Tom Morley was third up 10 lhe second lap, and by lhe lhird lap, he had moved pasl Lucero 10 own second place. Al lhe finish, il was Lanen, Morley, Cogar, Curoso and Lucero. The Scralch main evenl was another perfecl malch up. In lane one was Dubb Ferrell; lane two was Mike Bast, lane lhree was Dave DeTemple and way oU15ide in lane four sat Alan Christian. When lhe gate wenl up, as suspected Bast was finl into tum o,ne, but he was only about one inch in front of Ferrell followed by DeTemple and Christian. On lap two, BaSI and Ferrell were still batding for the number one spot. In the back straighlaway, Ferrell moved slightly iDlO the lead, bUl in the tum Bast was oU15ide and slightly in fin!. DeTemple wenl down and out of lhe. race. Christian also went down but was'back up and racing. By now, Bast had extended his lead 10 at least six inches. At the checkered, it was Bast. On July 10 is lhe Orange County Fair with the speedway tickel also good for lhe fair. In addition, back for one nighl only is the "Boogaloo Kid," Bobby Schwartz. • Results HANDICAP MAIN: 1.
