Minibikes were allowed to run for the fint time at Mammoth and Yamaha-mounted Terry Aston took home the top prize ahead of Johner Kight on a Yamaha and Kawualr.i rider Sam Storer. Donnie HaDlen gated- well at the stan of the Open Pro final and led the pacIr. as they thundered down the crowdpleasing Mammoth downhill. Maico rider Dave Coupe powered into second as Roder Rex Staten moved his Suzulr.i into third. Last year's triple winner. Warren Reid, dropped his Kawualr.i at the top , of the downhill and remounted in lut. With the field stretched out before 'him and leader Hansen already 45 seconds ahead. Reid began a charge through the pack. By lap two Reid was up to 15th and by lap four he had moved into fifth behind Wheelamith Maico rider Kevin Davia. Suddenly Reid went down hard, detuning himIelf for the rest of the weekend. With Reid out of action, Haoaen had smooth sailing out front and continued ~o cruise throughout the moto. Staten passed Coupe in the early laps and held a secure second, 10 seconds behind leader HaDlen. Back in the pack, "Radical Ron" Turner was worlr.ing his way up from a 25th place stan and moved into seventh near the halfway point. Suzulr.i rider Many Moates made his own run for the lead, moving put Davia in the closing laps and .reeling in Coupe. With two laps remaining, Moates closed on Coupe and tried to pus. Coupe kept the gas on and held off aevteJ"al of Moates' charges before overcoolr.ing the tum before the finish line: Coupe did a spectacular cartwheel as his Maico endoed over the sandy berm, losing its gas tanlr. and brealr.ing the ban in half. Coupe jumped up and rode the bike acl'Olll the finish line for fourth, using the gas in the float bowl and holding the throttle against the side of the triple clamps. Yamaha rider Tim Locey picked up fifth place. Turner's come from behind ride netted him the sixth place share of the purse while Maico rider Scott JohnMm tooIr. home seventh ahead of Davia, Maico rider Tracy Oswell and Yamaha-mounted Jim Ellis. Despite a badly injured hip, Cates was able to win the final race and hold off Yamaha rider Ka'hw Wall for 1eCOnd.
