Lodi's Cycle Bowl hosted its fint
of several double-header short
tracks scheduled for the next few
weeks with M lit D Promotions
going the honon Friday night and the
Stockton M.C. handling Saturday's
chores.
Both evenu could have used more
racen. but considering the heat and
the gamut of activities going on in the
area, the fans were treated to a variety
of racing and challenges during both.
races.
_
Former Mini and Sportsman plate
holder Joe Knight of Stoeltton piloted
his Jim Filice Yamaha around the
Jorgy's Can-Am of Bill Arbogast in a
pressure paaa to win the 250cc Expert
main Friday night. Arbogast had led
mOlt of the way while Aaron Hill,
aboard the Spinetti's Honda, held a
determined Mark Key out of the third
payoff spot.
Knight tried to double in the 500cc
Expen go, but former Mini number
one (way, way back) and current road
race charger Fred Merkel had other
ideas u he borrowed Del Cal1sen's 550
Honda and led wire to wire for the win
in an impresaive return to the din.
Knight remained second while Key
slipped into the third spot this time.
In the only other Expert action,
Wmltie Freitas blitzed the 85cc Expens
with Mike Macedo in second. When
Winltie ~ts out front, the neat Iitde
Honda IS alniOllt uncatchable these
days. Other Mini winnen were Shad
Johnson over John Noyer in the combined 8Sec race and Ronnie Knight in
the Pee Wee.
Brothers Alben and Chris Rudy
shared the i50cc Sportsman limelight
u each won his respective cu. In the
Junior go, Albert came throuJ(h tum
four fi.nt as Fred Crabaugh l~ his
brakes (Iite~aIly - they fell off) and
toea out the holeshotter Dana Dou8fu.
Albert took advantage and snared the
win over Chris Carr who came from an
off-the-track mess in tum four to end
up a challenging second.
The preceding Novice main had
been a bit ramer. Younger brother
Chris jumped to the front and grabbed
what has been an elusive fint for him
over the H-D of Manteca's Doug
Grote.
In other Sponsman action, Roger
Kirk nailed the combined 125-200cc
main over Dave Jacuon; Gary Caves
edged Jeff Manins in the Heavyweig~t
Novice go; and Brian Pedro slipped by
buddy Debby Rocha for the Junior
Heavy race.
Aaron Hill didn't win either of his
mains Saturday night, but a second
behind David Boyles, who nabbed his
second consecutive Saturday 250cc Expert main, gave him three out of four
placings for the weekend. Knight Ooe,
that is) also placed both mains this
evening - third in the 2505 and
second in the 500s - to give him three
oHour for the tour. Look for these two
youngsters to be way up on the D-56
plate list at year's end.
Mark Key won the 500cc go tonight
after Boyles cannoned his Honda while
leading. The wild shuffie behind
Mark's
McGill
Yamaha
was
reminiscent of the Tavis/Spence/Jorgy
battles of old.
In other action, a much·improved
Greg Gray rebounded from a poor
showing Friday to nab his third con·
secutive Saturday 250cc Junior main,
this time over Randy Fisher. In Novice
action, Danny McDonnell snared his
fifth main in a row in Saturday
competition. Saturdays must agree
with some of these guys. Antioch's
Gary Caves doubled in the 500cc
N.ovice class as Brian ~edro again
shpped by Debby Rocha In the Junior
gol' n M"Int aCllon. M: L Macedo tri.
...e
umphed over new Expen Ted Taylor
in the 8Sec main while Dion Clardy
aced
the Novices,
and
Mike
McDonnell ripped the Junion for his
second in a row.
