SIdecars steal show at Fresno By Judy Holley and Gwen Ridyard Photo by Ken Prosser FRESNq, CA,JUNE28 After watching the teams do their thing at the Fresno Fairgrounds, it's no wonder sidecar motocross is fast becoming a favorite spectator sport. The crowd cheered as winners John Palfreyman/Tom Lund crossed the finish line after a close first moto race with the teams of Ralph Whitney/Scott Whitney and Damon Duckett/Joe Broussard in the AMSA series race number four. The first moto was without a doubt the most exciting sidecar motocross race so far this year. In 15 laps,. the lead changed several times between Palfreyman/Lund, Whitney/Whitney, Duckett/Broussard and Bruce Butterfield/Phil Zemke. At the first tum of moto one, the 900cc Ducati driven by ButterfieldlZemke took the lead until Palfreyman/Lund on their 900cc Nonon took it away. It wasn't long before the Whitney team (father and soh), also on a 900cc Norton, passed them both, putting on a fantastic show. The fifth lap was a surprise to the 900cc teams as Duckett/Broussard took the lead on their home-built stock 650cc Yamaha and held it for three laps. On lap eight, Palfreyman/Lund recaptured the lead by. passing Duckett/Broussard crossed up in the air and held it the rest of the race. Another attention-getter was the 50lcc Maico driven by the new team of Bob Schnoor and Scott Pieper. Although this was the first race for the Maico, and bugs were still being worked out, it looked promising that the Maico is going to be a good engine for sidecar cross. in the lighweight class, it was James Sherman/Kevin Beckstead on their 500cc single Honda who not only finished first lightweight, but also finished sixth overall in the first moto, giving the heavyweights a hard time. The second moto began with two of the faster teams sitting in the dust. Palfreyman/ Lund stalled their engine and the team of Tom Ridyard/Perry Melillo (750cc Kawasaki),' having a last minute problem, were in the process of turning around at the drop of the flag. However, both teams made up ground quickly and were soon dicing it out with the rest' of the pack. Whitney/Whitney took an early lead with Duckett/Broussard follow· ing close behind. Whitney/Whitney maintained their lead until Palfreyman/ Lund caught them in a tum halfway through the race. Meanwhile, the lightweight tearns of Bob Hicks/Ron Seydel (5OOcc Yamaha) and Sherman/Beckstead held off Hicks/Seydel until a broken swingarm on the last lap caused them to ease off the throttle, giving Hick/Seydel first lightweight and second overall. Duckett/Broussard finished in first place with Schnoor/Pieper taking a third. Results AAST MO'TO: 1. John M..."...".om lIlnd INarl; 2. WhitneylSCOll Whitriey (No!'); 3. Damon Duckelt/Joe B _ d lVaml. Ralph Brown wins four atOregonRR By Russ Cazier PORTLAND,OR,jUNE21 The Oregon Motorcycle Road Racing Association's third race of the season at Portland International Raceway provided a showcase for the talents and experience of Gene Brown as he won Open GP, 250cc GP, Open Single GP and the $750 claiming class. . Brown's victory in Open GP, riding a Gamer Yamaha-sponsored TZ250, was only after a race·long dice with Dale Franklin, also TZ250 mounted. Chris Michak, still nursing a broken collarbone, was a close third on a Kawasaki 1000 super~ike. Brown also won 25Ucc GP on the TZ 250, but the cast of characters just behind him changed as Paul Peiroli turned in 4·2 finishes in the two heats for second, Doug Guthrie was !l-!l for third, and Franklin posted 2-4 finishes for fourth. Guthrie, Gene Brown's protege and also sponsored by Gamer's, led briefly in the second heat and is showing excellent progress. . Brown also won Open Single GP on the Trident Design/Trac Performance Yamaha thumper, holding off a strong big by Dan liaug riding the Formula II bike put together last year by Wasco Frames. Keith Pinkstaff, on a Suzuki GS 1100, won Open Production going away, then won Open Cafe on the same bike. Pinkstaff, unbelievably enough without a sponsor since the corporate demise of Rose City M.C., finished second in the first heat of Open Cafe behind Dan Zlock, who was riding a Suzuki 850 Cafe machine. Between heats he mapped out his strategy. "Dan has a little power an lot of cornering clearance on me. I'll have to stay close enough that I can draft him on both straights every time, because if he ever gets away from me it's all over. Then I'll draft and pass on the back straight into tum seven on the last lap." The . strategy proved unnecessary, though, as Pinkstaff shot to the lead and held it easily in the second heat. The best races of the day were in 4!lOcc Production. In the first heat, Mike Sullivan, an AMA Expen din tracker but only second-tim~ roadracer, led most of the heat until Robbie Adams passed him on the last lap. Sullivan crashed in tum eight trying to repass. In the second heat, Adams, Sullivan, Larry Buck and Jerry Hicks were a tight pack with each holding the lead at one time or another. On the next·to·lalt lap, Adams made his move and came from fourth to second, apparently distracting Hicks enough to cause him to crash with Sullivan falling right behind him. While Hicks put on an Academy Award-winning performance jumping up and down around his fallen motorcycle, Adams moved on to first place and the win. The Kawasaki Gpz-Yamaha Seca battle was decided, locally at least, in favor of the tuning fork company by Rhys Howard who took 550cc Production going away against an excellent field of Secas and GPu. The 600cc Cafe class was the largest field to take the track with 22 entries. Joe Rodgers, who dominated Open Single GP locally for several years with an'RE-5 rotary Suzuki, has come up with another killer engine from Suzuki, this time a three-cylinder, two-stroke GT550. Rodgers, felt by many to have an unfair edge with the rotary, has proven by his win in this very competitive class that he can ride. As mentioned, the $100 check from Oregon Motorcycle Pans for the $750 claiming race was tucked gleefully into the leathers of Gene Brown, who did the trick on an RD!l50. No one showed 'any interest in buying the bike fOT $750, but there were a lot of thoughtful eyes following the check. Results OPEN PAOO: 1. Kailh _ (Suzl; 2. Dan Bon.IHon); 3. Ught KENT, WA,JUNE 19 The racing was wild. WFO and fast-paced at Seattle International Raceway's weekly Friday night motocross. Cory Klaudt (Burien Yam) was the big winner as.he topped both highly competitive uSec Pro motos for the overall over Gary Lockreim (yam), while Doug M-er (Bellevue Suz) held his own to take a double moto bliu in the 250cc Pro class over JonJacoblOn (Suz). Winning the Open Pro class was Steve Miller (Yam), who was combined with the 2501. In 250cc Pro action, Massey put a holeshot into the leading position while Jacobson and Miller followed.
