Jorski jets to three in Oklahoma MX By Rebecca Sands OKLAHOMA CITY, OK, JUNE 6 Local leader Trey Jorski (Kaw) was challenged at Motorcycle Raceways' Saturday night race by Randy "The Conqueror" w-.m Holle..beck ..... tNa PHIl of 121cc NovIcea et MotorcyCle Receways. Scherb survives crash-filled Ross DownsST • By Michael S. LuSRm COLLEYVILLE, TX,JUNE20 Under almost ideal conditions, racing at the Ross Downs short track should have been perfect, but the evening was marred by a number of unexpected crashes. The get·offa seemed to be especially numerous in the 50 and SOcc claues, but the big boys were not immune as one 250cc Amateur rider had to be tramported to the hospital for oblervation. Commenting later in the evening, one youngster's father said that the track was "too good," and that the racers were going faster than they were used to. Be tha.t as it may, there was some terrific entertainment for everyone with the top caliber racing and the added attraction of a trick rider durillR intermission. 50 Dick "Wild Man" Malpass, out of Allen'. Cycles of Houston and Conroe, stopped by and did some amazing things on his 650 Triumph. Billing himself as more than a "wheelie king," Malpass had the fans standing and cheering as he roared down the grand· stand straight perched backwards on his machine. After several more aston· ishing maneuven, the "Mad Man" motored off, but promised to be back later in the season. The 50cc class saw some fine action in the main as Trace Polson on-his Kis· Iinfler Auto Supply/Motoreycle Specialties Suzuki got back into winning form and took care of Greg Teague (Yam), Bubba McCoy (Yam) and four others. McCoy was one of the riders who fell, but he picked himself up after his heat race crash and put on a fine show. Due to an extremely large turnout, the 80cc class was diVIded into Junior and Senior divisions. The Junior class was dominated by Alan Powers (Yam) who led from the green. The rac~ was red-flagged at the three·lap mark as young Mike Hale on a MAPS/Carter's Yamaha went down between turns three and four. It looked like the little Dallasite had really been hun, but he was back on his bike for the resran and finished an outstanding third in the eight·rider field. The 80cc Seniors brought out Scottie Scherb on his Northwest Honda of San Antonio CR-based racer. Scherb has now got himself a spare .trailer to haul his trophies home. Scherb, who is just U, brought three bikes this week and motored two to victory and one to a founh. In 80cc Senior, Shane Jolly (Yam) and James Carter (Suz) both tried hard, but they just could not catch the kid from San Antone. The 125cc class was the same song, different verse as Scherb and his Honda had ·no trouble with Duane DuVall (Yam) and Shane Jolly (Yam). Scherb looked to make it a triple for the night as he blasted his Honda into the lead of the 250cc Amateur final, but race official Eddie McCoy was less than happy with the stan and redflagged the race. Scherb, who had jumped the green, was put back on the penalty line, and with nine riden ahead of him, he was effectively bottled up. The contest developed into a duel between James Harrington on his Motorcycle Specialties Yamaha and young Duane DuVall on his Bultaco. This twosome looked like the race was thein with DuVall leading the majority of laps. Tubby Dotson on his Dallas Yamaha racer was a distant third, but on the white flag lap, DuVall began to lose power. Harrington passed him and Dotson, weaving through traffic, almOlt relegated DuVall to the shon trophy spot. Hot on Dotson's wheels was Scherb, but it was too little, too late. The 250cc Experts' field was down somewhat as a number of local riden had gone nonh to compete, but the competiton who were on hand were there to racel With the locals gone, the unknown qualities of some of the new faces made the fans sit up and take notice. But you couldn't discount young Ross Duncan on his Caner's Yamaha. Duncan, who is highly competitive in several fonna of motorcycle racing, grew up on the Ross Downs shon track, and with his lightweight and super quick bike, he had to be the odds-on favorite. But he had all he could do to stave off attacks by newcomer Butch Polite (Yam) out of Baker, LA and Johnny Johnson up from Houston on his Baytown Cycle Inn Kawasaki. Few challenged these leaden, and at the checken it was Duncan by three lengths over Polite. Johnson dropped back to a distant third. The Open Expert class was a little sweet revenge fo~ Polite as he took his 360 Yamaha to the win over the 500s of the rest of the field. The Grand Finale looked to be an outstanding race as staner McCoy arranged the panicipants around the track. There was a feeling that there could be trouble for everyone as Greg DuVall came out on his Yamaha 125 and was placed just past turn two. 250cc Amateur riden Duane DuVall, Tubby Dotson and Ross Duncan were approximately 10 yards in front of the stan/finish line and then back 50·75 yards behind the line were the 250 and Open Pros. You just can't give Greg DuVall an advantage like that, and try as they might, no one could get by him in 10 laps. Ross Duncan and Duane DuVall, Greg's brother, almOlt caught the leader, but when the checken fell, it was Greg DuVall taking the large Grand Finale trophy. Kirschbaum (Yam) and "Crankin' Clay" Hoenahell (Yam) as all three Ex. perts vied for the purse. JoOO was out of the gate fint in the 125cc class followed by Dennis Daft (Yam), Kirschbaum, then Hoenahell. Kirschbaum and Hoenshell passed Daft to go after Jorski. Kirschbaum really charged, and with the white flag lap just ahead, passed Jonki to lead across the checkers. In the second moto, JoOO quickly took the lead with Hoenshell next. Donnie Vance (Hon) was third with Daft founh. Kirschbaum bit the dust but recovered and moved up behind Daft. Vance then took a spill, advancing Daft to third. Kirschbaum punued and pressured Daft 'til he got around, finishing behind second place Hom· shell. Daft claimed fourth. At the stan of the fint 250cc Expert moto, Jonki claimed his usual hol, eshot With Kirschbaum blazing after him. Scott Cook (Suz), in the third· place slot, went down. Hoenahell's start was definitely not to his liking, but he rapidly changed it, moving up to third. Behind him rode Mark Dennison (Suz) and Guy Cooper (Hon). Kirschbaum passedJoOO to claim fint with Hoenahell third and Dennison founh. Jonki took the lead the second moto and made up his mind to keep itl In second, young Cooper displayed some fine riding ability which we'll probably be seeing a lot of. Hoenshell DNF with bike problems. Kirschbaum passed Cooper to accept second place. Cooper took third, Cook fourth. Jonki earned two wins in the Open class. Hoenshell placed 2-2 and Jim Thomas (Yam) won two third positions. Results1. K" e - lVwnl;' 2. Donnio Welch • PEE WEE: tsuzl; 3. LM _1Suz1. MINI MINI: 1. T...- AIIon lVwnl; 2. 51-. R _ lV_I; 3.
