Langley leads
ARRA Willow
SprlngsRR
By Lori Tyson
ROSAMOND, CA,JUNE 14
Willow Springs was run backwards by the American Road
Racing Association to keep things
interesting. and it did add a few
surprises for the riders. In one of the
first practices of ~ day, right bikes
went down in tum two reportedly due
to some oil on the track, but there
were no major injuries, and most of
the bikes were still able to race.
The 600cc Box Stock race showed
Boots Langley. on a GPz5S0, and
JOKph Bnuce11a. on a 550 Seca, swapping the lead throughout, while a few
riders tried taking shortcuts through
the infield brush. Langley stuck it out
and took the cbeckereil flag.fust.
In the 450-6OOcc Super Street match,
George Gereau, in the 600cc class, and
Steve Gerki, in the 450cc class, were
dicing pretty hard until the fifth lap
when Gerki dropped out due to me·
chanical problems. Gereau took the
win in the 600cc class. Clinton White·
house and Dave Behrendr; taking sec·
ond and third in the 450cc class
behind R. Drusen, had a real battle
going all the way to the end.
The Sidecar race started out being
led by Nakagawa/Gill with Garoett/
James right behind. But on lap four
Nakagawa/Gill t.ooIr. tum four, at the
top of the hill, a little too fast and
flipped it. No one was hurt, but it
tooIr. them out of the running. Garnett/
James went on to win it, but not with·
out a struggle from second place
LaPierre and Nelson.
The last race of the day was a new
class, the C1assia. There were some
beautiful motorcycles entn"ed in this
one, including MatehJesl, Ariel, Royal
Enfield, BSA, and Nonon. The
winner . . Glenn Hobbs on his Norton,
with Tom Campbell on a Royal Enfield 1IeCODd, and a BSA piloted by
Henry Costales third.
