From that point on, it wu Yarrow. Orlandi. McGill and I . side by side in every turn, better known u a "scorer'. nightmare." It was anybody's guess as Yarrow managed to find that little something extra in the last tum. taking the win by inches. Orlandi was second. McGill third and Ingels fourth. It was a perfect Class "A" exhibition aU the way. a beautiful sight to seel In the Division Two main. Pat Linn came from third place on lap one to take the lead in turn two on lap two. Andy Gilbertson was a close second. and Jack Foneth was third. Curry ~t past Foneth on lap four to claim third and force Foneth to founh. Bill Thomas was fifth. In the Division Three main. Scott Briard took another win. Dave Fonu was second and Charlie Haines third. Ban Bast won the Junior main with Scott Brant. who had earlier won both Junior heau, second; John Houston, Jr. was third. JUNE %0 Mlle. Ferte tlIk. . . v1e:tDry lap following . . Auburn Sc:ratch main ewnt. Yarrow and Faria sizzle at Auburn By Jann Houston AUBURN. CA. JUNE 19 Ii: was sizzling hot, beer drinking weather as the fifth week of speedway action got under way in Auburn. In the Scratch main, 30 Mike Faria took the lead from position two with Paul Orlandi moving into second from the pole. Eddie Ingels was third and Duane Yarrow founh off the wall. In turn two on lap two. Orlandi went down. Yarrow mOIled into second. and Ingels was third. Orlandi recovered and finished a distant fourth. That made it two Auburn Scratch mains in a row for Faria.. There is no argument that the Handicap main was the closest. most thrilling race the nonhem California crowd has seen in some time. After an "Eddie Ingels Rolling Restan." Joe Leduc took the lead on the fint lap. Ron McGill took him on the inside for the lead on lap two with Duane Yarrow possibly half an inch behind. finally managing to take the ever changing lead in turn three on the After a restan in the Handicap main when Eddie Ingels got an early stan and ended up on the 70-yard line, Bobby Holmes got a great Itan and held a solid lead on every lap to win. My only thought as the laps continued was that the "race" was behind Haimes. It did tighten up on the last lap as Harlan Bast, Jr. threatened to close in with Tom Ferris and Paul Orlandi making it a side·byside threesome in every turn. The frantic situation behind HoImes changed on lap four as Ferris went wide dropping to last place, and But followed suit dropping to third, allowing Orlandi to take second. Holmes, a newcomer to Division One, has reminded more than one speedway oldtimer of the late "Rollin' Rich" MacMurray. killed in a pine cruh in February 1980. His riding style, stature and manneriIms are 10 much like Rich. What a COIDpllinml to "Bouncin' Bobby" to be placed in a catagory like that! Holmes was the ""J11Mst winner I've ever seen! In the Scratch main, Mike Faria took the lead from position two, and like Holmes in the Handicap main. there wu DO gerting close to him, as Orlandi came off the wall into second place. Ferris was third and Duane Yarrow founh. Orlandi ~t acnJ8 every effon to take Faria. mcluding a few impressive wheelies. but "Flyin' Mike" held the lead. making it look easy. Orlandi was second. Ferris third and Yarrow founh. The positions had never changed. The Division Two main Itaned out looking more like an Elimination perby with Pat Linn meeting the track. face fint. in turn three on lap one. Dan Sweeton came around for lap two and lost it in the same turn. In the meantime. Mike McDonald had taken the lead and continued to hold it with Jim Reid of Reno second, AI Underwood third and Mark Dragony founh. Cun Miller won the Division Three main. barely holding off Robert Curry. Dave Fonu was third. The Junior main was a Scratch event with Ban BaIt taIr.iDg the lead out of the staning gate and Houston. Jr. trying hard to catch . ,but it wu Ban'. race aU the way. HOUIlOD wu second and Coon Wright third. l:n Results HANDICAP MAIN: 1. 3. _ - . Jr.; 4. -,"'*- 2. ..... 0rIIncI; 5.
